A Question from a Reader on my Islamic Education : Anwar al Awlaki On-Line

A Question from a Reader on my Islamic Education

August 12, 2008 - الثلاثاء 10 شعبان 1429 by Anwar alAwlaki
Filed under Imam Anwar's Blog

I have received the following question from one of the readers of my blog:

I am not sure how much you have noticed, but in the West, their is a campaign to undermine your personal credentials as an ‘Alim. The all-too-common tactic of attacking the ‘messenger’ rather than the message itself is being employed in these campaigns.
We want to be able to refute any false claims against you and support all of your works, wholeheartedly. Can you please provide us information regarding the Shuyukh that you have learned under in the past, and who you may be currently learning under? As well as, the source of your ‘ijaza, etc. This will be very important in refuting any slanderous attacks against your credibility.

I have received this question in various forms and the frequency of it increased lately. Here is my response:

Alhamdulillah I have had the chance to experience the various methods of gaining Islamic knowledge through studying directly under shuyukh in their general circles or privately. I have experienced the regular academic method of university study, studying by correspondence, and studying directly from books.

Studying under shuyukh in their general circles:

I have attended the circles of the scholars of Makkah and Madina for a combined period of a few months and for a short while attended the circle of Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen.

Studying under shuyukh privately:

In addition to an ijaza in Quran recitation according to the recitation of Hafs I have read and completed Sahih al Bukhari with Shaykh AbdulRahman Shumailah al Ahdal and he has given me ijazah to narrate Sahih al Bukhari from him through three high isnaads, one of them being the highest existing isnaad in the world. The other two he has received from his shuyukh in Makkah.

I have also read and completed Sahih Muslim and al Muwata by Imam Malik with Shaykh AbdulRahman and he has given me ijazah on both books.

I have studied al Minhaaj by Imaam Nawawi on Shafi fiqh with Shaykh AbdulRahman al Ahdal and Shaykh Hamud al Ahdal and received ijaza from both of them.

The above mentioned shuyukh have also given me ijazah to narrate through their isnaad the six books of Hadith, al Adhkaar by Imaam Nawawi, al Shifa by Qadhi Iyaad, and some other books in Shafi fiqh.

I have studied, traveled and lived with Shaykh Hassan al Ahdal and it was through him that I got to study with other scholars from this blessed family of scholars who are descendants of al Hussain bin Ali may Allah be pleased with them. They are based in al Marawa’ah in Tihama which is in the Western part of Yemen on the coast of the Red Sea and this is the land of the Sahabi Abu Musa al Ash’ari. He has given me a general ijaza in the six books of hadith, Buloogh al Maraam by Ibn Hajjar al Asqalani, Umdat al Ahkaam by al Maqdisi, al Minhaaj by al Nawawi, al Ghaya wal Taqreeb by Abu Shuja, and al Waraqaat by al Juwaini.

I have spent a short time with Shaykh Salman al Odah.

I have benefited considerably from the scholars I met in the US during the 90’s, a time in which there was a great influx of scholars in America.

And last but not least, I have benefited and continue to benefit from the Shaykh whom I trust his deen and know him to be a scholar who does not fear in the sake of Allah and is willing to stand up for the truth, Shaykh Hussein bin Mahfoodh. He is a friend whose relationship with me extends over the years. Until this day, I consult with him on the various important aspects of Sharia that I am presented with and I have continued to benefit from his knowledge and wisdom over the years. I have accompanied him and traveled with him and consider him to be one of the best scholars that I have come to know.

Regular academic university study:

In 2002 I was given permission from the administration of the University of Eman in Yemen to attend any class at any level and I took advantage of this and attended classes in Tafsir and Fiqh for a period of a few months. I have also benefited from the teachings of Shaykh Abdul Majid al Zindani the Rector of the University.

Studying Sharia by Correspondence:

I studied for two years through correspondence with the Islamic university in France. I lost interest and discontinued my studies with them because I reached the conclusion that it was not a proper method of disseminating Islamic knowledge. This was in the mid 90’s so things must have changed now in the field of correspondence study due to advances in technology.

Studying from Books:

After receiving the basics from the scholars and the keys of knowledge, learning from books is a lifelong practice of the seeker of knowledge.

My Ijazah:

In addition to the ijaza’s I have mentioned above I have a general ijaza in Quran, Sciences of Quran, Hadith, Sciences of Hadith, Tafsir , Fiqh, Usool Fiqh and Arabic from:

Shaykh Hassan Maqbooli al Ahdal

Shaykh Hussein bin Mahfoodh

Shaykh AbdulRahman Shumailah al Ahdal

Shaykh Hamud Shumailah al Ahdal

JazakAllah Khayr ya Sheikh for answering our question directly and going to the extent of sharing this information with ALL of your readers. It is very important that we have the necessary ammunition to defend you on the scholarly battleground. Those that are well-informed will clearly be able to see that your Islamic Educational background sits on a very high level…MashAllah. They will also be able to see your continual thirst for knowledge and learning and Insha’Allah take it as a characteristic of one who is sincere in his seeking of ‘ilm.

  11. theseekerNo Gravatar says:

I do not think that you brothers should have this attitude, because the messenger of Allah has asked us to see who we take our religion from. Not to undermine brother Awlaki, but it seems that you guys are focused on the individual rather than the message. The haq is the haq. Just as Abu Bakr said, if you were worshipping Mohamed then know that he is dead; if you worship Allah, then know that He is the Everlasting. Brothers/sisters should make an effort to improve themselves, rather then being just fans! I think the Imam should also point out to the brothers and sisters that this is not about being part of a crew, put he should try to push the brothers and sisters to self improve rather then just rambling on internet.

    fi amaniAllah.

  12. Usman AkhtarNo Gravatar says:

Subhanallah! this is such a large account of knowledge. I’m glad this has been released so that we can show people your authority in the different issues being discussed today. Although this is surely inspiration enough for the youth, perhaps our dear Imam, you can make a post on how and why, you took this route in your life, so that it may motivate the youth to do the same.

    @the seeker,

assalamualyum, I see that your intentions are good natured, mashallah, and you want us muslims to go ahead and gain this knowledge for ourselves, and not just be fans as you put it. I think your message will have more impact if you use softer words than “rambling over the internet”, which i think is true to an extent, but yet again could be said better.

  13. Kashif AminNo Gravatar says:

JazakAllah Imam for your detailed response. I think it is important for us all to remember that there will always be those from outside the Ummah and within, who seek to disunite us. These individuals who cast doubt upon the Imam’s credentials are indeed resorting to character assasination instead of sound rational and evidence. It would be interesting for us to know what their own credentials are and what qualifies them to cast doubts upon Imam Al Awlaki.

  14. IjabaNo Gravatar says:

    Bismillah!
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar! Indeed you are blessed with knowledge from great shuyooq may Allah make us ALL follow the footsteps of Ehlu Ilm.

  15. SalahNo Gravatar says:

Jakallahu khairun sheikh awlaki, even without posting your credentials, the quality of your lectures speaks for itself. Not only that, but when the enemies try to attack and destroy your reputation, that is a good sign that inshallah sincere leaders like yourself are on the truth and right path. 5 Stars for sheikh awlaki!

  16. IbraheimNo Gravatar says:

    Brother Anwar,

I appreciate you letting us know about your background. I must be honest and tell you that I never questioned it, especially after listening to most of your audio books. You use the Quran or Sunnah to back up your claims and these are the two sources a Muslim should use when he has questions. If Allah blesses a slave of his with knowledge then he should always share it with others who need it. You made a good point in one of your lectures about how Muslims are so quick to answer questions these days where as in the days of the Sahaba they would run from the questions. The more knowledgable you are in Islam the more afraid of Allah you become. I’m sure that the spotlight is on you in more ways than one brother Anwar. May Allah help us all learn the true path of this religion!

On a sidenote brother Anwar I have a recommendation for one of your lectures in the future. It could be about all the cults we have in Islam today. There is a very large Al Madiyah mosque not too far from my mosque. There is also the Nation Of Islam and the Shiites. I know there are many more but maybe if you have time you can do a lecture on how these cults came to be and how they are misguided. It would be very beneficial to all of us and could even save some brothers/sisters who THINK they are on the right path. May Allah allow this to happen and may peace be with you and your family.

The brother “theseeker” has rightly suggested the example of Abubakar Siddique RZ, we, as a true believer should see what ever is being said is in conformity with Quran and Hadith or not, instead of seeing who has said.

“Slap in the face to the FAKE Salafi’s of Salafimanhaj!”
The above comment by brother Bin Saif, is insulting to /salfi Group who is infact follower of Quran and Hadith only. How we can insult our true brothers? such expression should be avoided,May Allah Guide all of us.
    3- The main question by brother Anwer;
“Posted (anwar) in Imam Anwar’s Blog on August-12-2008″
    Brother Anwer, please ask your self few question;
a)Why a Muslim has to take a formal certificate from a shaikh? to convey the message of Allah? Did Allah swt. say so in the Quran? Did prophet order us to do?
b)Allah swt. sent the Quran for common and ordinary man’s guidance therefore any one who reads the Quran will have the knowledge, he is knowledgeable.
c)the ijza system is a fabrication of Quranic law, this system approved by few human beings who have no authority to do so, it is just writing by own hands and attributing to Allah. pls. see Baqra verse 79.
    Jazakallah

    Assalaamu Alaykum

    A question for Mirza.

In which language do you read the Qur’an?

Brother, you read Quran in any language, the message is same, no one can fabricate the original message because it is protected by Allah swt.Even if you read a Quran publish by deviant sect no one will find mistakes in translation. The real problem exist in Tafseer where scholars find enough room to play around. The only authentic Tafseer is the one dictated by prophet saws, other Tafseers are based on the opinion of the scholar and tafseer has no place in Sharia, because Allah swt. did not authorize any scholar to say/ define in matters of Sharia, rather all scholars are required to follow along with all Muslims Allah and prophet only. All Muslims have only one role to play in Islam; “Forward the message of Allah and prophet to brother Muslims and non Muslims intact.” without addition and modification. But, unfortunately, our scholars miserably failed on this account that is why we have 72 sect who are bound to Hell as confirmed by prophet except 73rd.This 73rd sect has no name. The member of this sect could be identified by their Aqeeda and action which must be based on Quran and Hadith only. By the way, the label “Imam” is applicable to imam of masjid or “The only Imam, Imam ul Anmbia, prophet Mohammed saws”, the rest are just followers like you and me.

    Assalamu Alaykum

This was the first time I heard these attacks on Imam Anwar Al-Awlaki, a scholar of Islam, who I have learnt a major part of my religion. I am also sure that he would also not like to be called an Alim. As I am sure he would profess that he does not know everything. This is apparent from the many audio lectures I have heard from him. Alghamdulillah Allah has blessed Sheikh Anwar with immense knowledge and wisdom that he effectively passes on to the many Muslims around the world that benefit from his talks.

I am sure that the only reason why the Sheikh shared his comprehensive CV with us is because of the Fitnah that was created about his credentials. And from reading the many comments, some positive, I am picking up that people are using this now to create more Fitn. Therefore if you do know of someone who did have a problem with the Sheikh, show him his CV but do not tell them “I told you so”, as this may create problems in your community that Islam does not need. Afterall the person who is attacking the sheikh is still your Muslim brother.

    Dear Mirza,

So you can read the Qur’an in any language as you said. From what I understand is that the Qur’an was revealed in classical Arabic which is Allah SWT’s Language and it should be understood in that form otherwise you loose the accuracy.

The Qur’an in any other language is translated by scholars and you don’t acknowledge them. Why would you even bother reading the translated version?

Brother you are contradicting yourself out of ignorance.

    No offence attended.

My only concern is that instead of spending time with beneficial knowledge, you guys are talking, and talking and talking. If I were to ask some of you what are the three branches of tawheed, half won’t know.
Also someone said that tafseer is not adequate! Soubhanallah! This shows that they didn’t read any tafseer. If you read Ibn Katheer, you will see the reference from Ibn Abaas, Mujahid, Ibn Masood etc.. who all learned from the Messenger of Allah.
Learn your deen brothers and sisters and stop being emotonial.
This is my last post here inch’Allah.

I believe Allah alone as my Lord, and I am his slave and all honour and Glory belongs to Allah SWT alone, I bear witness and loyalty to his last messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) till my last breath.

I salute Imam Awlaki’s transparency and genuine sense of Islamic scholarship, Alhamdulillah.

How many Muslim political leaders can even stomach being asked what credentials they have that merits them being a head of state?
Imam Anwar shows the humility of a true believer for humility is truly palpable when confronted with adversity.

But we live in sad times that Imam Awlaki is being viciously attacked because he upholds the truth.

May Allah SWT protect Imam Anwar and all others who preserve the truth Ameen

  44. ATNo Gravatar says:

Asalam Aleikhum my dear Bro’s & Sis.
I had friends who were deep in Sufism, they were always accuse me of being ignorant of Islam and call me names such as Wahabi, one day when we were travelling in a car, they played their Sufi Music, the time came when I asked to play my CD,one of them commented and said “I hope is not one of those American Muslim who are under the payroll of CIA”-I did understand cause anti-American sentiment was at rise.I started with CD from series of Seera of Muhammad SAW by Imam Anwar.I remember clearly how my friends where touched with the message, today these friends of mine are deeply in searching the truth, they abandoned following of madhheb,They listen to Imam’s lectures and step by step refer the topic to the Quran and the books of hadith.Together we attended on 11th May 2008 when Imam delivered the lecture “The Battle of Hearts and Minds”-
My opinion:There are people will speak out of ignorance but when they find and realize the truth, they follow sincerely.
There are people who looking for trouble wherever they go…I think Iman Anwar mentioned also in one of his talk.
Again as we know Satan does not leave a believer,Satan will always try to draw a line between two Muslims-we must be conscious about this.
Now there are those who are under payroll of Kufar, they put dunia infront of their eyes, they work hand and hand with enemies of Islam, these are the ones we need to expose them and deal with them…
Imam Anwar, this is my strong naseeha, dont agree to be emotionalized with these idiot who have no spiritual direction. The time is here that our justification of our actions and intensions, and submission should only be done before our Creator,The Giver of free Oxygen and owner of every breath that we take,The One holds the Title Deed of our lives,The Master of the Day of Judgement.
You have great task and mission to fulfill and this including educating the Ummah, revive and join the ranks of those struggle to bring back Khalifa.Insha Allah.
We respect you and accepted you and we will defend you unconditionally Insha ALLAH.

  45. theseekerNo Gravatar says:

As salam aleikum. The 3 branches of tawheed are (IN A NUTSHELL):

1)Tawheed ruboobiyah(believing that He is the Creator): The kuffar of Mecca believed in that even the kuffar of today
2)tawheed uloohiyah(believing in His Lordship): Meaning He alont should be asked,He alone should we prostrate to, He alone should we sacrifice for, He alone should love unconditionally.. THIS WHERE THE HAQ AND BAATIL SEPARATE.
    3)tawheed Asma wa siffat (names and attributes..Al-Hayy, As-Samee, Al-Baseer, Al-Qahhar…)

You should read the following in matters of Aqeedah:
    1) “Kitab At-Tawheed” of shaykh al islam Ibn Wahab. He makes things very clear.

    2) “Usool as-Sunnah” of Imam Ibn Hanbal.

  46. MirzaNo Gravatar says:

    Walykum as sakam
Brother Jameel, you mis quoted me, please read again and again i did not say that I read translation, I just did clarify that any scholar from, from any background, can not make any mistake in translation because Allah swt. is the protector of the Quran, and if he does he will be caught red handed. However these scholar mis guide the audience by mis interpreting in the commentary based on their own ideology and myth, since this commentary is published along with Quran, therefore, a Muslim being ignorant of Arabic language, will believe that whatever is being written at the margin of the Quran is a part of the Quran. Hence different scholar and different views(This is called Tafseer Al Ra’ey – opinion) is it clear now? The other Tafseer is based on Hadith which is dictaed by prophet and being narrated by various shaba, this is authentic tafseer and every one including scholar should follow and no one could hold a second opinion beside it.
Regarding your other point about Arabic Quran, ok based on Arabic Quran try to refute what i have said is against the Quran, if you can’t. then brother Anwar should come forward and explain, since he speaks truth, as all of you have confirmed above.
Let brother Anwar produce proof from Arabic Quran, which Ayah certifies or authorize an Alim to say in matter of Sharia, or let him produce an authentic Hadith, which says that Alim has authority to define Shria law. or let any other scholar of highest caliber to come forward with the proof.
The purpose of this dialog is to remove mis conception among Muslim brothers who ,since 1000 years are being programed by scholars Not to read Quran because they (ordinary muslim) can not understand it.

The “seeker” – shukran for going into details and define each and every word we speak.
The best examples for a Muslim to follow is when the Taliban did not want to give up Osama Bin Laden, Taliban were bombed and their country was detroyed. These are the qualities of Muslims we must value today, not of those sit in the air condition rooms and define each and every word people speak, quote verses of the Quran and hadith and do nothing. We want Qu’an and Hadith to work for us and we want to work according to Qur’an and hadith.Nothing more, nothing less. Yes for yes. In reply to the comment of the poster brother/sister Nargies ‘explain why you prefer to call urself “Imam “rathar than “sheikh”.i have seen people discussing about that also’:
Then let us clarify Imam Anwar al-Awlaki does not actually address himself let alone introduce himself to others as a ‘Shaykh’ or ‘Imam’ or through any other titles ascribed to him as this would not be befitting for any to call ones self by these for it’s not from the characteristics of humbleness and humility as found in amongst true scholarship in the past or the present (as is the case alhamdulillah with Imam Anwar insha’allah) to do as such. He our Imam Anwar refers to himself simply as a slave of Allah azza wa jall and being our brother in Islam.
Rather, it is not he but we the masses who have come to appreciate and call him Shaykh and/or Imam alhamdulillah as should be the case of those deserving of these title for we see plain the haqq and hikmah in his words and actions as was witnessed in the truthful heirs of the Prophets (as) who came before him on which blessed path we pray he is upon insha’allah. As for the title of ‘Imam’ then it was first used when addressing him in the early days prior to his migration when Ustadh Anwar was indeed an Imam of the community and congregation whilst being the khateeb and Imam in Colorado, California as well as in Washington, D.C. for the Dar al-Hijrah Islamic Centre masha’allah. Since those days to present the title of Imam has remained and is used often for him by many when mentioning him or his beneficial works for Allah’s sake.

  57. SalehNo Gravatar says:

In reply to the comments of the poster brother/sister theseeker when he/she states we should not be ‘focused on the individual rather than the message’ and ‘Brothers/sisters should make an effort to improve themselves’ then indeed in this you have proclaimed the truth. Truly we should not strive to be of those who blind follow people/ personalities/ a group or any other rather we should be of those who follow and are firm upon the haqq contained in the Qur’an and Sunnah insha’allah who always when witnessed said words and committed actions base these against daleel- if its true and there is not contradiction or opposition we take it giving shukr to Allah azza wa jall for providing these men or books from which it is taken and in the case if the matter stated has no sahih evidence we abstain from it.
However, in regards to Imam Anwar and particulars to him then to state as you have that those that witness the truth being uttered from him are somehow ‘being just fans!’ that they are in some way ‘part of a crew’ and are ‘just rambling on internet’ seems altogether harsh and quite unjust of you dear brother for he has no fan base club to speak of let alone a hizb whatsoever nor can be blamed for the actions of others be it on this Blog or any where else. Rather than Imam Anwar having ‘fans’ it is more accurate to state that those whom listen and apply what he has taught find he is from amongst the rare brothers in Islam that speaks the haqq unreservedly and as yet has not spoken without ilm and thus is one who the masses have duly appreciate for his steadfastness and honesty. In the case of Imam Anwar rather than having ‘fans’ or those who do taqleed of him it is more the case that the many are applying the wise saying of us to “Follow the Haqq and you’ll find its Men” alhamdulillah.
Also if I remember correctly our Rasul (saw) said something to the effect of (paraphrased words) hadith: “Real men are like rare camels few to find in a hundred.”
Therefore when we’ve found one such as Imam Anwar who firm in his deen due to being firm upon the Qur’an and Sunnah you’ll find us in return firmly with him insha’allah.
But make no mistake about it and mark my words if he (Allah forbid) were to turn away from the haqq and turn towards battil on fasad then we will not hestitate to turn against him or his work, no matter what muhabah we had for him as a brother- the haqq of Allah azza wa jall and our Rasul and preserving the deen comes first and foremost. I say this with the greatest love and respect for our brother and this will be said to anyone for none are beyond being advised and rebuked. Until such a time which we pray never manifests itself you’ll find us standing besides the slaves of Allah azza wa jall with them in their enjoinment of maroof and forbidding of munkar without fear of the blame of the blamers.

In reply to the comments of the poster brother/sister theseeker when he/she states ‘All of the other 26 posts are praising brother Awlaki. Haven’t they heard the warning of the Messenger of Allah not to praise an individual in his face?’:
Indeed my brother/sister there is truth in this and one should not praise let alone over praise any creation beyond its bound however we as Muslims should not always seek faults in others and are advised to have good opinions of other believers in general.
Perhaps you are aware of a hadith whereby we are advised to thank people and those who have posted aren’t in fact praising him rather are thanking Imam Anwar al-Awlaki thereby? The hadith of Abu Hurayrah (ra) on this is as follows: Rasul’Allah (saw) said: “He who does not thank people, does not thank Allah”. (Sahih Ahmad, Tirmidhi)
And the hadith I quoted previously in regards to camels is as follows:
“Real men are as rare as a reliable strong camel that can endure the burden of long trips; you can hardly find one in a hundred” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Jezak’allah to Imam Anwar, may Allah give him istiqamah- Ameen.

You are stating the obvious ofcourse no one has better understanding of the Qur’an and Sunnah then our Rasul (saw) that goes without saying. No one would compare anyone let alone Imam Anwar al-Awlaki to our Nabi so I do not see how I am supposed to have done as such and thereby somehow going to incur Allah’s wrath for a matter I did not intend nor do? Firstly, I see not any relevance whatsoever in your post to reply to me for I am not saying any here praised him.
Secondly, I am not stating that praise and thanks are one and the same matter.
Thirdly, the hadith is sahih for Imam Ahmed and Imam Tirmidhi stated so but you are no muhadith or authority on anything thus making classifications and statements of ‘context’ is to tread a thorny path, fear Allah azza wa jall.

Jazakallah, you have quted the right verse, Now do me a favor, find a single verse which authorizes any Muslim or scholar to say in matter of deen except the prophet.Further this verse it self is proof that in matter of disagreement we should revert to Allah and rasool, As you have quoted the verse ” And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger” based on this part of the verse I am reverting to Allah and Rasool, show me a hadith or ayah which says Muslims should follow other than Allah and rasool. Brother this ayah is eye opner to every Muslim, read this ayah again and again, think it over and decide your self. even a non Muslim after reading this ayah will declare that All Muslims are required to follow Allah and Rasool only.May I clarify here that according to Quran and hadith “those in authority” means the ruler or the judge because these two person has authority to take a decision within the frame work of Quran and hadith and if they decide against the order of Allah and Rasool, they will be punished on the day of judgment. They do not have green signal to say something out of their imagination.

You must substantiate with proof, did I ever say to follow other than Quran and Hadith? Take this example, I do not follow any scholar, you know that, and today I died, people buried me, will Munkir Nakir angles ask me why I did not follow Anwar awalki? or Abuhanifah? or Ibn Timyah?Never nobody will ask me this silly question because it is not required, Allah did not ask, so why to bother about any Imam? Islam came to free all of us from slavery and ordered to be a slave to only One Allah. the misguided scholars deceived ummah from this right path and diverted them to a road map which leads to Hell. Therefore, brothers and sisters save yourselves from Hellfire and follow only Allah and Rasool.

Jazakallah, you have confirmed that Imams or scholars have no privilege in the life hereafter, however my question is did Allah swt. asked Anwar or any other scholar to define and explain the Quranic message as he understood? off course not, instead what allah swt. require all Muslims(including scholar) to be a courier for Allah and rasool’s message to others, intact. Hence if Anwar is forwarding the message of Allah and prophet to others like any other Muslim brother then why one should call him a Imam or scholar? because the knowledge he is forwarding is not his own, he is acting as a post man. Will any one, who receives letter written by his father through a post man, kiss and embrace or praise the postman? is it practice in our daily life? if not, then why Muslims have this tendency of elevating their brother to a special status such as Imam?More over any scholar is bound to make mistake, why we do not take lesson from our past. Who divided the Ummah into 73 sects? if you study the history of islam you will come to know that those responsible for division were scholars of high repute.the reason for their deviation from the right path was due to the scholarship and unauthorized interference in matter of deen. Allah swt asked them to follow but they started legislation and got trapped into Shaitan’s plan. That is the reason I call upon all brothers to read Quran and Hadith so that any scholar who makes a mistake will be dealt with. If we do not have basic knowledge of deen then how we will be able to maintain a check and balance

It is pity that Muslims claim that they are the follower of Quran and Sunnah and they do all sort of imischievous and still proud to be a true Muslim. Brother Sajjad has posted a link which speaks of “online etiquette” brother did not think that how he could post a link which is irrelevant to the topic, because the wikipedia is an open source and allows any one to edit, hence what to day it is a rule, tomorrow me or any one could edit it and one can see that today’s rule has gone, and most importantly he forgot that the discussion is based on Quran and hadith and the rule he is referring to is from a person and he may not be a Muslim. he should have produce a ayah from Quran or hadith, if he feels that if his argument is based upon Sharia, it is hight of hypocrisy to claim to be follower of one doctrine and produce references from other sources.

Brother aren’t we discussing Quran and Hadith? is there any thing more meaning full than Quran and hadith? Is this kind of knowledge you are getting from the lecture of Anwer? That is why Allah swt. said the guidance is Quran, no other book or person could guide any one to right path.

Mirza, if you think that I do not want to enter into an argument with you is because I do not know how to respond, but it is because I am of the opinion that such an endeavor is a waste of time as I previously put.

    Asslaamu Alaykum Warahmatullaahi Wabarakatu
Imam, I thank Allah (SWA) that Allah has granted you the knowledge Alhamudlillaa, because we have benefited so much from listening to it and especially since it is also helping us to become better Muslims. May Allah grant you the strength to carry on with your good work Insha-Allah. I know that we would probably never meet you, so I will write you instead, and pray that Allah grant you and your family, Jannah tul Firdous, Ameen Inshallla, and hope InshaAllah that i will meet you in Jannah.

For Mirza, Astaghfirullaa! You are an example of what Shaytaan is doing, continuously trying to cause dissension amongst Muslims and Shaytaan has succeeded. You think you know alot about our deen, that is why you are thumping your fists against your chest and you want everyone to listen to you. You are arrogant for sure. May Allah Protect us from people like you, who are trying to turn something beautiful into something awful. In fact… I want to run far away from people like you because I am afraid… so we have to make continuous duah to ask Allah to protect us from Shaytaan, InshaAllah Ameen. May Allah also grant us the Imaan to ignore your comments.

Ramadan is coming and I want to take this opportunity to wish all our Muslim brothers and sisters all over the world well over the holy month of Ramadaan. May the Almighty Allah
Grant you Imaan and Taqwa to fulfil the obligation of this holy month. May your
Ibadaat be accepted and all your Duas answered.
May this Ramadaan bring to you only that which
is good and may all good come to you in this month
May you have a constant state of Igsaan that places you on a
    high Darajah of Maghfeerah
May there be bountiful amounts of Barkat always
    applied to you
May you have the Health and Strength to complete this Ibadaat in the highest state of awareness of the
    Almighty Allah’s Tauheed
    Insha-Allah.

    Jazzaakala Gheir

  115. ABU YAHYANo Gravatar says:

Is the word “IMAM” only for the Messenger of Allah (saw), and him who leads the prayer?
    Volume 9, Book 89, Number 252:
    Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar:
Allah’s Apostle said, “Surely! Everyone of you is a guardian and is responsible for his charges: The “IMAM” (ruler) of the people is a guardian and is responsible for his subjects; a man is the guardian of his family (household) and is responsible for his subjects; a woman is the guardian of her husband’s home and of his children and is responsible for them; and the slave of a man is a guardian of his master’s property and is responsible for it. Surely, everyone of you is a guardian and responsible for his charges.”
    Volume 9, Book 89, Number 256:
    Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Allah’s Apostle said, “You should listen to and obey, your “IMAM” even if he was an Ethiopian (black) slave whose head looks like a raisin.”
    Volume 9, Book 88, Number 206:
    Narrated Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman:
The people used to ask Allah’s Apostle about the good but I used to ask him about the evil lest I should be overtaken by them. So I said, “O Allah’s Apostle! We were living in ignorance and in an (extremely) worst atmosphere, then Allah brought to us this good (i.e., Islam); will there be any evil after this good?” He said, “Yes.” I said, ‘Will there be any good after that evil?” He replied, “Yes, but it will be tainted (not pure.)” I asked, “What will be its taint?” He replied, “(There will be) some people who will guide others not according to my tradition? You will approve of some of their deeds and disapprove of some others.” I asked, “Will there be any evil after that good?” He replied, “Yes, (there will be) some people calling at the gates of the (Hell) Fire, and whoever will respond to their call, will be thrown by them into the (Hell) Fire.” I said, “O Allah s Apostle! Will you describe them to us?” He said, “They will be from our own people and will speak our language.” I said, “What do you order me to do if such a state should take place in my life?” He said, “Stick to the group of Muslims and their “IMAM” (ruler).” I said, “If there is neither a group of Muslims nor an “IMAM” (ruler)?” He said, “Then turn away from all those sects even if you were to bite (eat) the roots of a tree till death overtakes you while you are in that state.”
    Volume 9, Book 89, Number 319:
    Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Apostle said, “There will be three types of people whom Allah will neither speak to them on the Day of Resurrection nor will purify them from sins, and they will have a painful punishment: They are, (1) a man possessed superfluous water (more than he needs) on a way and he withholds it from the travelers. (2) a man who gives a pledge of allegiance to an “IMAM” (ruler) and gives it only for worldly benefits, if the “IMAM” gives him what he wants, he abides by his pledge, otherwise he does not fulfill his pledge; (3) and a man who sells something to another man after the ‘Asr prayer and swears by Allah (a false oath) that he has been offered so much for it whereupon the buyer believes him and buys it although in fact, the seller has not been offered such a price.”
There are also many more circumstances were the word “IMAM” was also used!

Is this from encyclopedia Britannica or Guinness book of record? you must learn how to quote a reference.
However the Hadith quoted by you clearly says that the hadith is related to Ruler, hence it doesn’t support your view point, please try to understand the hadith before copy and pasting it.Do not think that the word “Imam” means “Your Imam” read carefully to get the correct meaning of it

I Would like to mention how blessed i feel to have found a scholar such as Imam Awlaki, who speaks the truth at all costs and supports that truth with evidence from the classical islamic sources, Mashallah. These days so called scholars are trying to make out that they are teaching ‘traditional or classical’ Islam and somehow everybody else is learning and teaching something other than that. May Allah continue to bless the Imam and awaken the muslims to the truth.
