Didn’t G.W. Bush say that the Americans would be greeted in the streets of Baghdad with flowers and roses?
Seven years later G.W. Bush himself is greeted with a pair of shoes!
Yesterday while Bush was speaking at the office of the Iraqi prime minister in Baghdad, an Iraqi journalist threw a shoe at the President, who ducked it, only to have the second shoe thrown at him, and again he ducked it. The President has been showing off his skills of ducking since 9-11. The man said: “This is the farewell kiss you dog!” and then he said: ““This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq.”
Both, the throwing of the shoe and calling him a dog are ultimate forms of humiliation and disrespect in the Arab world. This, alHamdulillah, is proper greeting for this invader of Muslim land. But the even more proper treatment is that which is leveled against the invading troops on the streets of Baghdad.
The shoes of this journalist are better than those leaders in the Arab world who paraded their daughters to dance for Bush.
Before the Green Zone Scholars, and RAND Muslims, the promoters of the fiqh of humiliation, step up to the stage in defense of Bush and claim that this act is ‘against the Sunnah!’ let it be known that the Muslim is kind with the disbeliever who is decent and pays due respect to Islamic authority, but the Muslim is harsh against the arrogant and the transgressor. The words of Rasulullah to the leaders of Quraish were: “I came to with slaughter,” Abu Bakr cursed the disbelievers in Hudaybiyyah, and Omar would consistently beat these disbelievers, curse them and threaten them. On another note, and as ridiculous as it may sound, for those who say that al Maliki is “wali amr” and as Muslims we should not revolt against him, is this journalist at sin for not having sought the permission of al Maliki to throw his shoes? Because to them, this is definitely an act of fitnah!
Unfortunately he missed. As someone on the net has rightfully stated:
“Nobody wants to see President Bush being missed by a flying shoe like this. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity that has been missed here.”
In the End, if anyone of you gets to know the brand of shoes this journalist was wearing please inform us about it. We would all like to go out and buy some, in solidarity with our brother!

I have just read the same story, I wish the man had not missed. I doubt it would have knocked some sense into him though. We make dua that Allah strengthens the believers in Iraq Insha Allah. Verily this ummah will only stick together if we unite. What is truly sad, and disgusting is that modern day people claiming to adhere to the “Salafi” tradition will defend to the bitter end this behaviour of King Abdullah, using whatever proofs they can find to support their positions in the name of “defending” the rulers. It is as if the rulers are exempt from following the Shari’ah. Even more interesting is that these same people will go to great lengths to prove from the Qur-an and Sunnah such things as the permissibility of prayer while wearing shoes. I am not trying to belittle this concept, my point however, as Sheikh Anwar made in an earlier post is that some people are so pre-occupied with certain issues and details, yet are totally oblivious, and ignorant of major issues. Sadly enough, these same people today are the one’s who repeatedly claim to be the ONLY TRUE followers of the Qur-an and Sunnah, and those who are not with them are ALL deviants. On a serious note did anyone notice the lack of action when the event occurred? Where was the secret service? It would almost have seemed that they wanted him to get hit! The only thing I saw was Al Munafaqeeni put out his hand out for the second shoe. May Allah reward this man with more feet for the next occassion!

Officials at the Iraqi-owned TV station, al-Baghdadiya, called for the release of their journalist, saying he was exercising freedom of expression.

A statement released by the government said Mr Zaidi’s actions, which also included him shouting insults at President Bush, “harmed the reputation of Iraqi journalists and Iraqi journalism in general”.
Correspondents say the protesters are supporters of Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr – a leading critic of the US presence in Iraq. Smaller protests were reported in Basra and Najaf.

An Iraqi official was quoted by the Associated Press as saying that the journalist was being interrogated to determine whether anybody paid him to throw his shoes at President Bush.
He was also being tested for alcohol and drugs, and his shoes were being held as evidence, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The Cairo-based al-Baghdadiya TV channel said Mr Zaidi should be freed because he had been exercising freedom of expression – something which the Americans had promised to Iraqis on the ousting of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
“Any measures against Muntadar will be considered the acts of a dictatorial regime,” the firm said in a statement.
The programming director for al-Baghdadiya, Muzhir al-Khafaji, described the journalist as a “proud Arab and an open-minded man”.
He said he was afraid for Mr Zaidi’s safety, adding that the reporter had been arrested by US officials twice before.
“We fear that our correspondents in Iraq will be arrested. We have 200 correspondents there,” he added.

i disagree with you guys this is wrong and shouldnt been done. In islam when someone grants you protection that means no one can touch him. An amazing pair of shoes indeed. This journalist throwing shoes at Bush, is doing more to voice the anger and resentment of Muslims towards Bush and his administration, than any Arab leader has done these past 8 years. The president of Iraq should be ashamed of himself for shaking hands with someone who has blood all those hands…and the blood of his own people in his own country!!! I personally want to thank the journalist for speaking out…in so little words and actions, he was able to express what millions of people around the globe are feeling right now.

One speaker in a cd called lessons of the sahabah living as a minority said that the practice was to appoint an amir and rally around him. In the US at least that could be in the form of ISNA. The Islamic speakers need to work on this point in a similar fashion that the abbasids did before they took over the caliphate.

Subhanalah this incidence also reminds me of the Hadith in Sahih Muslim’s Kitab al-Fitan Wa Ashrat as-Sa’ah (The Book Pertaining to the Turmoil and Portents of the Last Hour) which is narrated by Abu Sa’id al-Khudri about the greatest martyr in Dajjal’s time:

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The Dajjal would come forth and a person from amongst the believers would go towards him and the armed men of the Dajjal would meet him and they would say to him: Where do you intend to go? He would say: I intend to go to this one who is coming forth. They would say to him: Don’t you believe in our Lord? He would say: There is nothing hidden about our Lord. They would say: Kill him. Then some amongst them would say: Has your master (Dajjal) not forbidden you to kill anyone without (his consent)? And so they would take him to the Dajjal and when the believer would see him, he would say: O people. he is the Dajjil about whom Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) has informed (us). The Dajjal would then order for breaking his head and utter (these words): Catch hold of him and break his head. He would be struck even on his back and on his stomach. Then the Dajjal would ask him: Don’t you believe in me? He would say: You are a false Masih. He would then order him to be torn (into pieces) with a saw from the parting of his hair up to his legs. After that the Dajjal would walk between the two pieces. He would then say to him: Stand, and he would stand erect. He would then say to him: Don’t you believe in me? And the person would say: It has only added to my insight concerning you (that you are really the Dajjal). He would then say: O people, he would not behave with anyone amongst people (in such a manner) after me. The Dajjal would try to catch hold of him so that he should kill him (again). The space between his neck and collar bone would be turned into copper and he would find no means to kill him. So he would catch hold of him by his hand and feet and throw him (into the air) and the people would think as if he had been thrown in the Hell-Fire whereas he would be thrown in Paradise. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: He would be the most eminent amongst persons in regard to martyrdom in the eye of the Lord of the world.

Those before them had already plotted, but Allah came at their building from the foundations, so the roof fell upon them from above them, and the punishment came to them from where they did not perceive.

Then on the Day of Resurrection He will disgrace them and say, ‘Where are My “partners” for whom you used to oppose [the believers]?’ Those who were given knowledge will say, ‘Indeed disgrace, this Day, and evil are upon the disbelievers’ -
.
The ones whom the angels take in death [while] wronging themselves, and [who] then offer submission, [saying], ‘We were not doing any evil.’ But, yes! Indeed, Allah is Knowing of what you used to do.
.
So enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and how wretched is the residence of the arrogant.”

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala protects the heroes of the Ummah, those in Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, Pakistan and Palestine. Allah Azza Wa Jall Inshallah will protect the current leader of the believers at the front lines to win the current and future battles of the Mujahideen, for Islam and for the Truth and Justice. May ALLAH protect him and all those who follow him.

“So Allah protected him from the evils they plotted, and the people of Pharaoh were enveloped by the worst of punishment –

The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], ‘Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment.’”

And they had planned their plan, but with Allah is [recorded] their plan, even if their plan had been [sufficient] to do away with the mountains.

So never think that Allah will fail in His promise to His messengers. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution.
.
[It will be] on the Day the earth will be replaced by another earth, and the heavens [as well], and all creatures will come out before Allah, the One, the Prevailing.
.
And you will see the criminals that Day bound together in shackles,
.
Their garments of liquid pitch and their faces covered by the Fire.
.
So that Allah will recompense every soul for what it earned. Indeed, Allah is swift in account.
.
This [Qur’an] is notification for the people that they may be warned thereby and that they may know that He is but one God and that those of understanding will be reminded.”

I am reading a Book (Story of the Sellers of the Imaan) This book is on Salalhuddin Ayubi Rehmaullah’s life and how he cope with the fitna of his time: while we see that Ummah was in her worst condition of dis-unity as far as moral and religious values are concerned those were even ever worst. at the same time I remember the lecture by sheikh that Allah is preparing us for victory. while we see that Majority of Muslims were involved in zina and drinking, friendships with Kuffar and betrayal with Khalifa. We find likes of Ayubi, the men of real character who despite of all the inside and outside problams managed to defeat the crusaders. Look at Mullah Umar Hifdhullah, how he is defeating Crusader while all the Police Forces intellgience agencies, Armies,media and technology is on the side of crusaders, and they have been successful winning the moajority of the Muslims on their side declaring Mujahideen as Terrorists and Jihad as Terrorism- and still look who is demanding more troops more aid, taliban or Nato? look at the recent attacks on Nato terminals which has forced them to change their logistic routs.
I remeber a famous saying of Sallahudding which I would quote for puppit regimes and drinking Generals of so called Muslim Armies.
“he said, you should play with birds and have fun with pets, the drinker and Zani(adulterer) cannot fight in the battle field”
Its the party of Allah that is and will be victorious. Allah is only testing our Imaan, He is not in need of you and me, its just our Imaan which would allow us to join the Caravan which is destined to win.
8-54. O you who believe! Whoever from among you turns back from his religion (Islâm), Allâh will bring a people whom He will love and they will love Him; humble towards the believers, stern towards the disbelievers, fighting in the Way of Allâh, and never afraid of the blame of the blamers. That is the Grace of Allâh which He bestows on whom He wills. And Allâh is AllSufficient for His creatures’ needs, AllKnower.
56. And whosoever takes Allâh, His Messenger, and those who have believed, as Protectors, then the party of Allâh will be the victorious.

1.Jihad is not done on the condition that no harm will be received.A hadith says ,he who dies without the mark of Jihad will meet Allah with a flaw in him.Just go through the pages of history and see how many Sahaba received fatal injuries.
2.The period when Imam hambal suffered and the period when Yazid tortured those where the periods where the rulers will tyrants but they never invited Kuffar to rule over them,they never sought kuffar’s protection.Those tyrants were sinners but shariah law was followed although there was corruption.

I work in a reputable US company, when I went to work Monday morning I had forgotten about the shoeshine on BUSH. The day was busy as a Monday until the lunchtime my staff and colleges gathered in a break room and they started casual conversations as they usually do. Miss Ann and Jenna started laughing about something on the other side of the break room. They asked me as I was passing by, knowing I am a Muslim kind of orthodox in what they believe. This person is so ignorant, he is concerned about the protection of the Pharaoh of our time. GWB has ordered the plundering of Muslim wealth, occupation of Muslim land, killing of hundreds of thousands of innocent Muslims, whose armies have raped our women, who tortures the innocent in Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghuraib, has and continues to support the brutal zionist occupation of Muslim land of Palestine include the Baitul-Maqdis with help of military and wealth like no other nation on earth. My response to this is:
1. The Khilafah was destroyed over 80 years ago, WHAT PREPARATIONS AND PLANNING HAVE YOU SO-CALLED SAUDI-SALAFI’S BEEN DOING SINCE???? May ALLAH reward Sheikh Anwar al-Awlaki with Jannatul Firdaus, he (yet again) spoke about these people in an earlier post entitled, “A Question about the Method of Establishing Khilafa” http://www.anwar-alawlaki.com/2008/08/29/a-question-about-the-method-of-establishing-khilafa/
The proposed methods that Islamic groups presented for re-establishing al Khilafah are:
1. Through tarbiyyah and then somehow when our condition changes the khilafa will be re-established again. While others say we will do tarbiyyah until the ummah is ready and then we will fight the enemies of Allah.
…
“The proponents of the first method have never given the ummah any benchmark to when we have done sufficient tarbiyyah to move on to the stage of implementation and therefore will remain in a perpetual state of tarbiyyah while negating the duty of Jihad.
They also miss the point that tarbiyyah is within one generation and not multigenerational. Meaning the change that Rasulullah brought which started with dawa and ended with jihad was within the lifetime of one generation. It all happened within 23 years. Every other successful change in the ummah occurred within one generation. History is a testimony to this.”
These people are PRECISELY what Sheikh Anwar is talking about. If you go to their websites, their Masjids, or their conferences, they have no action plan for the establishment of the Khilafah. All they talk about is, gain knowledge. 80 years of gaining knowledge, and yet our situation is getting worse and worse. What knowledge do we need to gain? All you will hear them say is, “memorize Qur-an, study Kitab ul-Tawheed”, “40 Hadith Nawawi, ‘Aqeedah Wasatiyyah, learn arabic, etc.” My question is, when do we progress to the next level? When you go to the secular schools, when you pass grade 1, you move on to grade 2, and so on. What about Islam? Is it the Sunnah to study ‘Aqeedah ONLY FOR 80 YEARS, WITH NO END IN SIGHT???? What is also funny about these people, is that they will debate about such issues like the permissibility of wearing shoes while praying, but ignore the responsibilities of Jihad in lands today where it needs to be implemented. Again, Sheikh Anwar discussed this in an earlier post entitled, “Finding a Balance” http://www.anwar-alawlaki.com/2008/12/01/finding-a-balance/
“The problem is not in talking about the sunnah in matters that one may assume to be trivial but the problem is when one talks about the beard to the exclusion of Tawhid, wearing the clothes above the ankle to the exclusion of Jihad, or the miswak to the exclusion of wala and bara.
On the other hand, it is even a more serious problem when people occupy themselves with the mustahab ( the recommended) and ignore the major issues, some of which are issues of aqeedah. There are some that escape from the responsibilities that demand sacrifice to the safety of the easy rituals. We need to take Islam as a whole. We should follow Quran and the way of Rasulullah in all matters.”
None of these saudi salafi groups discuss the obligation of Jihad today, nor do they provide an action plan to be implemented to help in the restoration of the Khilafah. Do we just study Kitab-ul-Tawheed and other select books perpetually? My other issue with this comment is this: When the Jihad in Afghanistan was going on in the 80’s (almost 20 years ago) against the former Soviet Union, where were these people who were saying that “now is a time of weakness, no the time of Jihad, so let us seek knowledge”? Were they not going up against a super power also? There was no disagreement at that time that this was Jihad, to the point that Fahd gave free airline tickets to those who wished to participate in it. What is pretty pathetic, is that in the book, “Things that nullify one’s Islam” by Sheikh Abdul Wahhab, point #8 is: “Trying to give the polytheists victory and assisting them against the Muslims.” The noble Sheikh says, “The eighth kind of apostasy is aiding the polytheists against the Muslims, and giving the polytheists assistance against the Muslims. This means to help the disbelievers in killing or hurting the Muslims. Similarly, whoever loves the disbelievers has disbelieved. This is the meaning of taking them as allies: “And whoever of you takes them as allies, then verily he is from them.” 5:51 According to the twisted logic of these saudi salafi’s, if King Abdullah supports uncle sam in helping to attack Iraq, and loves the US president who is at war with Muslims who wish to establish Shari’ah, then these are just his personal sins. One would imagine that a Muslim who follows the Qur-an and the Sunnah as understood and practiced by the Salaf would be happy to see the enemies of Islam defeated, and humiliated, and would rejoice and celebrate seeing the Mujahideen and the Muslims victorious. In the case of the saudi salafi’s, the opposite is true. On the issue of seeking knowledge from the scholars, look at this beautiful quote (also used by Sheikh Anwar in his lecture on the “Constants on the path of Jihad”, “Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (ra) narrates from Imaam ‘Abdullaah Ibn al-Mubaarak and Imaam Ahmad ibn Hanbal that they said, “If the people disagree (ikhtilaaf) regarding anything, then look at what the Mujaahidoon say- since the Truth is with them; because Allaah says, “As for those who wage Jihaad in Us (for Our Cause), We will surely guide them to Our Paths.” al-‘Ankaboot: 69. Refer to Majmoo’ al-Fataawaa (28/442).”

PART ONE:
The Murji’ah are called Murj’ah because they make the actions (deeds) fall behind the faith (Iman). Irjaa’ means to delay.
1-Al-Murji’ah al-Mutakallimoon.
Jahm Ibn Safwan and those who followed him say: Iman is only what is affirmed and known by the heart. They don’t consider the actions of the heart from Iman.
They thought that a man can be a total believer in his heart even if he curses Allah, his prophet, fights the Awliyaa’ of Allah, supports the enemies of Allah, destroys Masjids, humiliate the Qur’an and the
believers, be generous with the
kuffar…etc. They say that these are all sins that do not harm Iman in a man’s heart.
They say he can do this and he is a inside (in heart) a believer in the
sight of Allah. They say we only affirm the rules of disbelief in this life to the one who does all of the horrible actions mentioned above because these sayings and actions are a sign for his disbelief.
If you present to them the Quran, Sunnah and the consensus that a man who does these actions is a disbeliever because of made these actions above, they respond
that these actions are a sign that there is no affirmation and knowledge in his heart.
Disbelief to them is only one thing: Ignorance; belief to them is only
one thing: knowledge; or the denial and affirmation of the heart. They differed in whether the affirmation of the heart is something different from knowledge or whether it is the same. Even though this definition of Iman is the worst, many
of “al-Murji’ah al-Mutakallimoon” adopted it.
Many of the Salaf, like Wakee’ ibn al-Jarrah, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Abi Abaid, and others, declared those who define Iman the way of “al-Murji’ah al-Mutakallimoon” as disbelievers. These Scholars said that Satan is a disbeliever as stated in
the Qur’an. The disbelief of Satan was because of his arrogance, and refusal to bow down to Adam, not because he denied a saying of Allah. The same is the case
of Far’awn and his people.
Allah says:
“And they belied them (those Ayat) wrongfully and arrogantly, though their ownselves were convinced thereof” [27:14]
Mussa Said also to Fir’awn,
“Verily, you know that these signs have been sent down by none but the Lord of the heavens and the earth as clear” [17:102]
As you can see, Mussa alaihi salam, the truthful says the above to Fir’awn, which is a proof
that Fir’awn used to know that Allah reveals the signs, and yet he was from the most stubborn and transgressor individuals because of his corrupted will not because of his lack of knowledge. Allah Says,
“Verily, Fir’aun (Pharaoh) exalted himself in the land and made its people sects, weakening (oppressing) a group (i.e. Children of Israel) among them, killing their sons, and letting their females live. Verily, he was of the Mufsidun (i.e. those who commit great sins and crimes, oppressors, tyrants,
etc.).” [28:4]

Murji’at al-Fuqahaa’ are those who say that Iman is the affirmation of the heart and the saying of the tongue. They don’t consider the deeds (actions) from Iman.
Murji’at al-Fuqahaa used to be some jurists and worshippers from Kufa (a city in Iraq). They used to affirm that a person is not a Muslim unless he says the word of Iman (Shahadah) while he is able to do it unlike “Jahm Ibn Safwaan.”
Murji’at al-Fuqahaa’ recognized that Satan, Fir’awn and the other
disbelievers used to believe in their hearts that what the messengers are conveying is the truth.
However, if Murji’at al-Fuqahaa’ did not affirm that the actions of the hearts are from Iman, then their argument will be similar to what “Jahm Ibn Safwaan” said.
Murji’at al-Fuqahaa’ denied that Iman increases and decreases because of
the deeds. However, they used to say that Iman used to increase before the
completion of the revelation; i.e. whenever Allah reveals a new verse then it is obligatory to affirm it, and this affirmation (Tasdeeq) is added to the previous affirmations of other verses. Thus, but the end of the revelation, Iman ceased to increase.
After the revelation they used to say that the Iman of all the Muslims is the same; the Iman of the first generations like Abu Bakr and Umar is the same as the Iman of the most disobedient people like al-Hajjaj Abu Muslim al-Khurasani, and other then them.

PART THREE:
3-Irjaa’ in our Time
Irjaa’ in our time is wide spread whether amongst the common people or those who work for Islam and Dawah.
• The Irjaa amongst the common people is well known: “Iman is in the heart,”
they don’t pay attention to the deeds rather they ignore and belittle the
actions of the limbs by making excuses that the Iman of the heart and the pure intention is all that matters.
• The Irjaa’ of those who work for islam and Dawah is not in the definition of Iman.
They define Iman a good definition as a name. They say Iman is the saying
of the tongue, belief of the heart, actions of the limbs.
They say Iman is by sayings and
actions, and this is the correct definition of Iman amongst the
people of Ahl-us-Sunnah Wal-Jama’ah.
HOEVER, when it comes to applying this definition especially about the
matters that negates Iman, it appears clearly that the “actions of the limbs” that they affirmed in the definition of Iman is not applied.
Yes most of the new murji’a, say that Iman increases by the good deeds and decreases by the bad deeds exactly as Ahlus-Sunnah affirm.
HOEVER, sins to them only decrease
Iman, but never negate Iman, except in one situation: if there is rejection, Istihlaal, or belief in the heart, irregardless of how great is that sin or deed.
They say that eventhough the prophet clarified and said, “Iman is seventy
and something branches, the best of these branches is the declaration of “La ilaha illa Allah”, and the lowest of these branches is removing harmful objects from the road; Hayaa’ (Modesty) is (also) a part of Iman.” Reported by Muslim and others.
The Khwaarij and those who followed them from the extreme Takfeeris make the absence of any branch of the branches of Iman as a negation of Iman.
The Neo-Murji’ah say, as a reaction for the action of the Khwaarij, that the absence of all of the branches of Iman cause a decrease in Iman only. They don’t consider any of
these branches as something that negates Iman except if there is Istihlaal, Juhood or belief. Both, the Khwaarij and the Neo-Murji’ah are upon Misguidance.
Thus not all the branches of Iman are the same. The branch of “Laa Ilaha Illa Allah” is not the same as Hayaa’ or removing harmful objects form the road. The absence of some of these branches can decrease Iman like Hayaa’, and the absence
of some of these brances can negate Iman like the declaration of “Laa Ilaha Illa Allah.”

PART FOUR:
The Neo-Murji’ah don’t consider any deed as a deed that negates Islam by itself. They say it has to be accompanied by Istihlaal, Jihood, or belief, this is the Kuffr according to them. Wether this Kuffr is the Kuffr is cursing Allah, bowing down to an idol, legislating with Allah, ridiculing the Deen of Allah, all of these actions are not actions of disbelief by themselves, but they say that these actions are a sign that the doer believes in Kuffr. Kuffr is his belief, his denial, or his Istihlaal (not the action itself). Therefore, the Neo-Murji’ah
opened a great door for evil against the Muslims. Many of those disbelievers, atheists, hypocrates and Zanadeeq started attacking the Deen of Allah with ease and confort.
The Neo-Murji’ah make excuses for the Tawaagheet and the apostates.
They argue in defense of the Tawagheet and the Apostates with some doubts that the Tawagheet themselves never thought of, or heart of.
Those Tawagheet never found sincere soldiers to defend them and protect their falsehood similar to the Neo-Murji’ah.
That is why some of the Salaf said about Irjaa’: “It is a religion that pleases the Kings,” and some of them said, “We fear their Fitnah (Murji’ah) more than the Fitnah of the Khwaarij.” They used to say “Khwaarij are less in evil than the Murji’ah,” which is a true statement.

The initial reason for the extremism of the Khwaarij was their anger for the boundaries of Allah as they claim.
The Murji’ah, however, their way encourage the people to exceed the boundaries of Allah, the orders and the commands of Allah, and to open the doors of apostasy to make it easy for the disbelievers, and apostates (to make excuses for themselves, and continue in their evil.”

We may disagree with one another but please do so with adab. This seems to be lost now a days. Everyone is quoting Quran and Hadith and asking for daleel, but the most basic of things such as how to speak to one another has vanished.

The companion ‘Abdullaah Ibn ‘Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “Five matters result when five things happen: If people break their covenant with Allaah, He will send an enemy against them; If they rule by other than the Law of Allaah, poverty will spread among them; If they become deceptive in trade, Allaah will deprive them of crops and they will be struck with famine; And if they withhold the payment of Zakaah, they will be struck with drought.” (Tabaraani). In another narration he sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “If they break the covenant of Allaah and His Messenger, Allaah will send an external enemy against them who will seize some of their possessions; If they do not rule by the Book of Allaah, nor attempt to implement everything in it, Allaah will spread enmity among them.”
This is a comprehensive clarification of the conditions for victory and the causes of defeat for the Muslim nation. Breaking the covenant of Allaah and His messenger, or in other words, disobeying Allaah and His messenger, is one of the reasons for its defeat and being subjugated by its enemies. Likewise, ruling by other than the rulings of Allaah is the reason for the poverty, disunity and conflict which is occurring among the Muslims.
Conversely, obeying Allaah and His Messenger sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam is the source of victory. Allaah says that which translates as: “O you who have believed, if you support Allaah, He will support you [by giving you victory].” (Muhammad: 7).
Sa’d Ibn Abi Waqqaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, was checking on his army during the battle of Qaadisiyyah. He passed by the tent of one group of soldiers at night and found the men inside praying Qiyaam, or voluntary night-prayer, and remarked: ‘Victory comes from such a tent’ then he passed by another tent and found the men inside sleeping and remarked: ‘Defeat comes from such a tent.’ This was despite the fact that the men who were sleeping only missed a recommended prayer and not an obligatory one; yet Sa’d considered missing this recommended act to be a reason for defeat.
Qutaybah Ibn Muslim, who was a great Muslim conqueror, was the leader of Khurasaan when it was being attacked. He passed by Muhammad Ibn Waasi’, who was one of the Taabi’een, or the generation that followed the Sahaabah, while Muhammad had his finger raised towards the heavens supplicating to Allaah. Thereupon Qutaybah remarked: ‘That finger is dearer to me than thirty thousand soldiers’.
How can the Muslims expect Allaah to grant them victory while they are discarding prayers, refusing to pay Zakaah and dealing in interest? What can they expect when alcoholic drinks and nightclubs become prevalent in their lands? What happens when evil becomes widespread?
The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam was once asked: “Would we be punished by disasters which befall us while we have righteous people amongst us?’ he sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam replied: “Yes, if evil becomes widespread.” Allaah says that which translates as: “And fear an affliction which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allaah is severe in penalty.” (Al-Anfaal: 25).
Therefore, if Muslims truly wish for victory, then they must change what is in themselves as Allaah says that which translates as: “…Indeed Allaah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves …” (Ar-Ra’d: 11).
A Muslim must not feel despair and lose hope in Allaah, as He may grant Muslims victory due to some of the oppressed or weak righteous people amongst them who cannot defend themselves. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “You are provided for and granted victory due to the weak amongst you”.
It is a fact that the leaders and rulers of the Muslims will be as unjust and oppressive as the Muslims are amongst themselves and their leaders will be dealt with as they deal with their subjects. Imaam Ibn Al-Qayyim said: ‘Reflect on the wisdom of Allaah when the Muslims are subjugated by their enemies as a result of the powerful amongst them (Muslims) oppressing the weak and denying the rights of the oppressed. Due to this, Allaah will send those who will dominate these Muslim leaders and deal with them exactly as they dealt with the weak, an eye for an eye. This is the way of Allaah from the time history began to when it will end.
Look how Allaah has given the Muslims exactly the types of rulers that their own deeds and actions deserve. It is as though their actions are manifested in the form of their leaders and rulers. Therefore, whenever people are just among themselves, their rulers will be just to them; whenever people defraud and cheat each other, their rulers will do likewise to them; and if the people fail to fulfil the rights of the Allaah, then their rulers will fail to give them their rights.
A man asked ‘Ali ibn Abu Taalib, may Allaah be pleased with him: “Why have difficulties and hardships arisen during your time, while this was not the case at the time of Abu Bakr and ‘Umar?” he replied to him: “‘Umar and Abu Bakr were leaders over people like myself while I am a leader over people like you’.
O Muslims! One of the major signs of abandoning the religion is to forsake prayers. This is done by either not praying at all, or by only praying the Jumu’ah prayer and neglecting the rest of the daily prayers. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “The bonds of Islaam will be broken one by one; the first of which will be the implementation of Islamic legislation and the last of which will be prayers” and he sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam also said as narrated by Jaabir, may Allaah be pleased with him: “What lies between a man and disbelief is the abandonment of prayers.” (Muslim). He sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam also said: “Prayer is the backbone of the religion, he who establishes it has established his religion and he who does not establish has abandoned faith.”
Praying is the first thing that one will be held accountable for on the Day of Judgement and it was among the final things that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam strongly emphasised on before his death. Allaah described the believers with that which translates as: “…Those who [carefully] maintain their prayer.” (Al-Ma’aarij: 34) and also that which translates as: “Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers at specified times.” (An-Nisaa’: 103).
The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam also informed us that there will come after him rulers who will abandon prayers or delay their performance when he sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam advised us to: “Pray on time, then pray with them as an optional prayer.”

We say that Saudi have helped the U.S. and that the rulers are kuffars because they helped disbelievers kill
thousands of Muslims and allowed them to enter the holy places.
Sheikh Ibn Baz stated (Al-Fatawa 1/274): “There is a consensus amongst the scholars that whoever supports the disbelievers against the believers (Dhahar Al-Kuffar ‘Ala Al-Muslimeen), and assists them by any means of assistance, then he is a disbeliever just like them (the disbelievers he supported)…”
I also heard that Sheikh Ibn Baz released a Fatawa allowing U.S.A to enter the holy lands.
So what do we say about Sheikh Ibn Baz (Please don’t get me wrong but I’m just Asking this question)

The companions of the prophet differed on their treatment of individuals throwing projectiles towards their leaders. Uthman bin Affan tolerated it but Muwayia did not and ordered the exectution of a person due to it. Even though the person was correct in his view towards a local ruler who was making a mistake.
Whatever happened, happened. Now its become a debate in the parliament there. As if all the problems of the country are solved. The trial is delayed as rarely something gets done on time in the our countries. The solution is to give the a chance in front of a judge and let the judge look at the case and give him a suspended sentence or something so that this does not become a habit. We are hoping that bush visit was to indicate intentions of withdrawal. Since the ummah is divided there is no way to ask for blood money on behalf of all the innocent victims, but a full withdrawal of us troops will hopefully be in the right direction for everyone.
…perhaps we should polish george bush’s shoes instead, right after we polish king abdul,s, because that is closer to the way of the salaf right???-you super salafees are hilarious, you should worry more about what Allah thinks of us and less about what the Kufaar think. As a Salafi myself (a Salafi upon the Path of the Qur’an, Sunnah, and Salaf, not upon the leash around the Saudi state’s neck), I read many of their anti-Qitaal things and began to have doubts myself, but your refutation has strengthened by in my position again. JazakAllahu Khayr.
Also some brother/sister asked that, if Zeidi is a Shi’ah, then should we call him our brother?
Well I never heard whether Zeidi is Ahl us-Sunnah or Shi’ah, but if we know for sure that he is indeed Shi’ah we should not refer to him as our brother. I still do appreciate his action though, and I would even if a Mushrik did it in the same way. (I’m sure Shaykh Al-Awlaki is unaware of the possibility that this man could be a Shi’ah, however.)
Allah knows best whether this man’s Shi’ism is just out of ignorance, or whether he is truly a deviant at heart…

As-Salamu’alaikum. First off, I want to extend my sincerest apologies if my tone offended either of you in ANY way. WALLAHI I am not a Sheikh, and I am a human like yourselves full of mistakes. Like yourselves, I would like to see our Muslim Ummah victorious and see the enemies of Islam defeated. As a point of clarification, none of us believes that throwing shoes will bring victory to the Ummah. WALLAHI, his death wouldn’t either. Not at all. The point that Sheikh Anwar was trying to make is that a common person (even if he is shi’ah), understood the reality of this man, and treated him in a manner befitting such a person within his capacity. The Sheikh wanted to contrast this (and my point for providing the links to King Abdullah parading around with GWB hand in hand) is to show the so called “leaders” of our Ummah treat the Pharaoh of our time with the utmost respect, knowing full well how this man is treating the Muslims today. As-Salamu’alaikum. That is an EXCELLENT question. First and foremost, remember that as people of Ahlus-Sunnah, we do not blindly follow anyone, nor follow anyone absolutely EXCEPT the Prophet SAW. From the students of knowledge that I have spoken to in the west (who have studied under some of the ‘Ulama kabair in Saudia) the correct opinion regarding Sheikh Ibn Bazz’s fatwa about allowing the US entry into Saudia to attack Iraq during the first gulf war is that he was wrong, and that because he was blind, he was given falsified information to get him to issue a fatwa that Fahd wanted. Of course, if you are a Saudi Salafi, you will defend this fatwa (as the head of one such website did when he came to Toronto and clearly said that bringing the US for help is no different then one of us calling 911), and say that Sheikh Ibn Bazz was 100% correct, he was NEVER lied to, Fahd is a great man, he has a Qur-an printing complex named after him (so that definitely means he is a great Muslim, and defender of Islam) and that bringing the Mujahideen to defend the land of the Haramain would have been foolish, wrong, crazy, blah blah blah (even though they were able to defeat the russians, Saddam Hussein all of a sudden became more powerful – don’t ask me how). Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said :
“Let him who believes in Allah and the Last Day either speak good or keep silent, and let him who believes in Allah and the Last Day be generous to his neighbour, and let him who believes in Allah and the Last Day be generous to his guest.”

Having said that, we should also consider the fatwa of Sheikh Albaani on this very issue. If I understand this fatwa correctly, Sheikh Albaani said that Kuwait was wrong for seeking help on the basis of nationalism (which they did, they did not seek help as a Muslim country in need of help from fellow Muslims). Sheikh Albaani then said that both Iraq was wrong to threaten Saudia, and that Saudia was WRONG to bring the US to help fight Iraq. He also added a very interesting point to this (WHICH THE SAUDI SALAFI’S EITHER DON’T KNOW ABOUT, OR THEY DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT), and that point is this:
WHILE IRAQ IS NOT BEING RULED ISLAMICALLY, HAD THE US GONE ON THEIR OWN TO ATTACK IRAQ, THEN IT IS THE DUTY OF THE MUSLIMS TO UNITE WITH IRAQ AGAINST THE US!!! Saudi Salafism a Stronger Force in Islamist Militancy than Recanting Clerics

In the past month, the media have reported an attack on India’s embassy in Kabul, killing 41; an attack on the Red Mosque in Islamabad, killing 10; an attack on the U.S. consulate in Istanbul, killing six; a raid by the Taliban and its allies on a U.S. firebase in Afghanistan’s Konar Province that killed nine American soldiers and a July 15 suicide bombing in Iraq that killed 28 Iraqi military recruits. While these events seem grim, fear not. The Western media continue to argue that victory is close over al-Qaeda and its allies. “Cheer up. We’re Winning this War on Terrorism,” says the London Times; “Turning Their Backs on Terror,” claims Der Spiegel; “Al-Qaeda’s Vietnam,” trumpets the New York Post (The Times, June 27; Der Spiegel, July 14; New York Post, June 17). How does one reconcile the former events with the latter analysis? And how pertinent is either to assessing the strength of Islamist extremism?
The war-against-Islamists-is-won media boom began in April, with articles by Western journalists claiming al-Qaeda is being destroyed by the recantations of former Islamist theoreticians (New Republic, June 11; New Yorker, May 26). The recantations, it was argued, are turning Muslims from al-Qaeda and its allies and persuading them to accept U.S. foreign policy in the Muslim world and life under repressive police-state regimes. That the recanters’ words drew attention from Islamists is clear, but the argument that the recantations—delivered from Egypt’s prisons and the Saudi police state—spelled doom for Islamism seems overdrawn. A prominent Salafist cleric, Shaykh Husayn Bin Mahmud, put the point nicely. The recanting “is just acting forced by the prison guards,” Bin-Mahmud wrote. “Tell [the recanter] that we would listen to him when he tells us to retract when he is standing between Usama Bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri in Afghanistan, enjoying his freedom and safety and the safety of his family. How can we listen to him when we know he is in Husni [Mubarak’s] prison and knowing how Muslim prisoners in particular are treated?” (alhanein.com, November 25, 2007). Ayman al-Zawahiri put it more logically, asking: “Why is the jihad against the Russians in Afghanistan an individual obligation, whereas in Iraq today, it is one of the cardinal sins?” (Al-Sahab Media Production Organization, December 16, 2007).
The recantations making a splash in the Western media are part of a bigger project conducted by several Arab states—led by Saudi Arabia—to make the United States and its allies believe Islamism’s strength is ebbing. Their campaign is made easier, of course, because the West desperately wants to believe such claims. The Arab regimes, in fact, built a cottage industry of recanting; earlier in this decade, Riyadh ran television shows featuring recanting jihadi clerics that earned the mocking name of “the series of repentance” (alhanein.com, November 25, 2007). Today, the Libyan regime is about to join the recanting caravan. Saudi-controlled media in Europe, for example, are publishing teasers about the coming renunciation of “armed violence” by the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group—long an al-Qaeda ally. Its now slickly groomed spokesman, Nu’man bin Uthman, says the group’s imprisoned leaders will soon publicly oppose violence (Al-Sharq al-Awsat, July 7).
Beyond recanting clerics, the Saudis, the Egyptians, and the Yemenis have trumpeted “re-education programs” they are running to “rehabilitate” captured Islamist fighters, while incarcerated, right-thinking, regime-paid clerics tell the former mujahideen that “religious deviants” led them astray and are taught regime-approved interpretations of Islam. They are also prepared to reenter society with classes in trades, art and music. This program of what the West might call “tough love” is being hailed by Riyadh, Cairo, and Sana as a success, these claims meshing with the West’s faith in reforming flawed human beings by therapy [1]. There are suspicions that re-educated graduates are released on condition they go to Iraq or Afghanistan to fight infidels, which was the method the Saudi and other Arab regimes used to unload firebrands during anti-Soviet jihad.
Finally, Riyadh has gone the extra mile to apply soothing eyewash to Western eyes by having its clerical hirelings claim—Quranically speaking—that black is white, as well as by engaging in a startling ecumenicalism: “Aggressions against Muslims and occupation of [their] land,” the kingdom’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdul-Aziz Al al-Sheikh, said in July, “cannot be a justification for explosions…” Later in his statement, the Grand Mufti let slip the main point of his message, which was to protect the al-Saud family, not the West. “Obeying the Muslim ruler without sedition,” al-Sheikh said, “is a basic principle of Muslims who follow the path of the Prophet” (Reuters, July 3).
Later, Riyadh had the senior religious bureaucrat Shaykh Saleh al-Laheedan, chairman of the Saudi Arabian Supreme Judiciary Council, attack bin Laden: “Osama is a preacher of evil,” said Shaykh al-Laheedan. “If a man performs prayers in [the] night and then disobeys the rulers of his country, how can he be a good man? No doubt, such people are sinners.” Again, this cleric’s main message was that the Sauds must be obeyed (Gulf News, July 10). The Saudis also are calling for more cooperation among world religions and are mulling the opening of a Christian church in the kingdom. This month it even sent King Abdullah—who met Pope Benedict XVI last year—to open an interfaith conference in Madrid that was organized by the Saudis’ Muslim World League (AFP, July 14).
Just as reality is juxtaposed with over-optimism above—Islamist attacks contrasted with claims al-Qaeda and its allies are losing—the Saudi-led Arab campaign to make the West see a mirage of a fading-Islamist threat is marred by reality. In Egypt, for example, President Mubarak’s security forces continue to harass and arrest members of the Muslim Brotherhood. In Yemen, President Salih is confronting attacks from both al-Qaeda-in-Yemen and hostile Shia tribes, and it is clear the Islamist tide in Saudi Arabia is not receding. So far in 2008, Saudi security services have arrested more than 700 Islamists suspected of planning attacks on oil, security, and industrial facilities and Riyadh is forming a 30,000-man force to protect these targets. In addition, Saudi officials admit they have neither won the ideological battle with “religious deviants” nor stopped terrorist fundraising; they also say Islamist cells exist across most of the country. Adding to internal frictions are simmering animosities between Sunnis and Shias, after leading Sunni scholars in June ascribed “infidel principles” to Shia doctrine (Saudi Gazette, June 27; Al-Sharq al-Awsat, June 18; Reuters, July 2).
Again, how can the foregoing contradictions be reconciled, and an assessment made about the strength and future viability of the Islamist threat? Perhaps the best way to get a handle on this issue is to understand that much of the above—the attacks, the recanters, the re-education camps, Riyadh’s ecumenical outreach—is a diversion from the key variable in the future vitality of Islamist militancy: The doctrine of Salafism and its continuing proliferation. Bin Laden and his allies are overwhelmingly Salafist; men and women who profess an austere, semi-martial brand of Sunni Islam based on the Quran, the Sunnah and the traditions of the “pious ancestors,” the first four generations of Islamic leaders. Salafism is Saudi Arabia’s state religion; it is taught at all levels of its school system to Saudis and others who come from abroad to study or are the children of immigrant Muslim workers and it is the faith Riyadh exports to all areas of the world via a large, well funded proselytizing program staffed by Salafi clerics educated in the kingdom. Salafism is the engine of contemporary jihad; its base is in Saudi Arabia; and no amount of jihadist recanting or damning by the “king’s clerics” will stunt Salafi jihadism as long as the doctrine is taught and continues to grow in popularity:
“In Kuwait, followers of the Salafi current won a majority of parliamentary seats in the 17 May [2008] elections. In Jordan, the Muslim Brotherhood elected a [Salafi] conservative, Hammam Said, to be their general guide. He is the first Jordanian of Palestinian origin to lead the group since it was founded in 1946. In Egypt, [Salafi] conservatives running the Muslim Brotherhood show no intention of allowing a new generation of younger reformers to take over. In Palestine, Hamas’s hawks have been consolidating their position since the movement seized Gaza a year ago, while ‘pragmatists’ are being increasingly sidelined. Wherever you look in the Arab world, Islamist conservatism of the brand known as ‘Salafist’ is gaining ground while moderates seem to be running out of steam. Even regional television stations seem more interested in conservatives than in mainstream or opposition moderates. Also, many social institutions have fallen into the hands of the Salafis.
“Recently, the Salafist trend has widened its appeal to the Arab public. No longer confining themselves to conventional preaching places, such as the mosque and home gatherings, conservatives are using hi-tech methods, including blogging and Facebook. I have met a few young Salafist men who haven’t the slightest interest in updating the content of their beliefs, but nonetheless are computer savvy and networking online all the time. The moment has come for their brand of Salafist discourse, they believe. And they are using the latest technology to connect with thousands of their generation” (Al-Ahram Weekly, July 10-16).
As Salafism spreads, it is vital that the West sees that the Salafism taught in the Muslim world is not an aberrant form of Islam; it is a respected—indeed, honored—set of beliefs and is being taught accurately. A 2004 essay mounted on the Saudi dissident website Al-Hijaz makes this point; the essay merits more attention than it has received. The anonymous author writes that the Salafi mujahideen are a huge problem for the Saudi and other Arab governments because they are the true voice of that version of Islam. While the regimes may be stronger in military terms, the author argues they will ultimately be defeated by the Salafists:
“In our opinion, the Saudi government is losing on the ideological front, although it may win temporarily on the front of confrontation by security means. The reason is that the dominant ideology feeding the current of violence is an indigenous ideology, not an intruder into the kingdom. It is an ideology that the official religious establishment espouses and that it considers a sound standard for the entire world, except when it comes to applying it to the Saudi case and to the al-Saud family. Thus the graduates of the Salafi school, who have embarked on violence have added nothing to this ideology; they simply have applied it. They have been honest in using it and faithful to their belief… It is not correct to maintain that the ideas held by the [Salafi] practitioners of violence are eccentric or [applying a] false doctrine. In fact they are the prevailing view among the Saudi Salafi religious current in the kingdom. If members of the official current use this ideology, it is called sound; if the practitioners of violence use it, it is called eccentric” (Al-Hijaz, August 15, 2004).
The author warns that seeing Salafists as deviants is self-defeating because their violence is “authenticated … on the basis of texts, pronouncements and fatwas by senior scholars. These are clear texts subject to no ambiguity or misreading” (Al-Hijaz, August 15, 2004). The answer to whether al-Qaeda’s ideology can be defeated is not, therefore, to be found in recanting clerics and reeducated militants paraded by the Arab regimes. It will be answered by their willingness to remove Salafism from schools and missionary activities. To date, the evidence is that Salafism has over the last decades—and especially since 9/11—experienced a Saudi-sponsored expansion from the Arab heartland to rest of the Muslim world.

Bismillah, was-Salamu ‘alaykum wa Rahmatullah wa barakatuh,
My dear brother, Ahmad,
It was absolutely refreshing and reassuring to have received a letter from you, and the brothers and sisters from all over. You have no idea what a letter from the outside world means when one is here. The whole psychological makeup of prison is such that it is designed to remove your individuality, instead turning you into nothing more than an identification number. Everyone wears the same color prison uniform, eats the same food, is subject to the same regulations, etc. So to receive a message marked with your actual name on it, written specifically for you — this is a reminder that you are an actual person with an actual life and actual family and friends. So, having [so many] letters slipped under my cell door reminded me of how fortunate I am to have received support from people who mostly know nothing about me except that I am their brother in faith, and [these] letters never leave my side.
One thing I would like to point out is in regards to how many brothers and sisters, when writing to a prisoner or any other Muslim in need, will start off the reminder with ‘you already know this,’ or ‘I can’t say much you don’t already know.’ In Surat al-Hashr, Allah says in one verse: {”O you who believe, fear Allah and let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow, and fear Allah…“}. So, the same injunction was made twice in the same verse to fear Allah. Imam Ahmad pointed out that patience is mentioned in the Qur’an over ninety times. So, there are certain concepts that have to be drilled into our heads constantly for us to truly understand and internalize and apply them properly in our lives. Reflect, also, how you have been and will continue to recite Surat al-Fatiha at least seventeen times everyday for the rest of your life. Shaykh ‘Uthaymin once pointed out that the Qur’an and the reminders it contains are such that every time you read some verse, you come away with a deeper meaning than the previous time you read that same verse! Now, in an environment such as this, the concepts of patience, tawakkul, etc. take on completely new meanings. So, every reminder boosts morale and strengthens resolve, and helps you look at the situation in the right light.
The greatest asset in here is the ability to remember Allah no matter what condition or situation I am in. When I was handcuffed and couldn’t use my hands to pray, when I was in solitary confinement and had no contact with human or book, when shackled by my hands and feet during the hour-long rides back and forth between court and prison hunched over in the dark, stuffy prison van, etc. — when all sources of material comfort have been taken away, it is then when you realize exactly how essential dhikr is to your sanity and survival. People here place so much reliance on the skills of their lawyers, the mercy of the judge, etc., but looking around at them all, I laugh at how easy it is for me to call upon the One who controls every atom in the universe compared with how hard it is for an inmate to get what he wants from those on the outside that he places so much reliance on, who are not always placing him on their list of priorities. Ibn al-Qayyim’s ‘al-Wabil as-Sayyib‘ contains great parables and expositions on the virtues of dhikr. But the reason I mention how helpul the act of dhikr has been here is to encourage you all on the outside to realize its true value and take proper advantage of it now, and not just if you happen to go to prison, because if you remember Allah in times of ease, He will help you in times of hardship, guaranteed! It’s the easiest act of worship!
I spend my time reading whatever I can get my hands on. Every Tuesday, the library cart is supposed to get some books to my unit, but they are extremely inefficient here when it comes to such services, and the cart has only been around once in the past few months. I picked up and completed a 700-page biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer (the so-called “father of the atomic bomb”) called ‘American Prometheus.’ It was quite a revealing story of how the man who essentially handed America the nuclear bombs by which she sought to bring the Soviet Union to its knees was blacklisted by the FBI and excommunicated the minute he voiced his opposition to the thirst of zealots in the administration to build even deadlier weapons. I also just completed a history of the Colombian cocaine trade that had its peak in the ’80s, and last night completed a book about the topic of celibacy as debated in the Vatican. There are also old issues of National Geographic Magazine floating around between inmates here, so I try to read those whenever one comes my way. I think they are popular around here because they contain more pictures than words . I had a copy of Yusuf Ali’s translation of the Qur’an for a while, but I had lent it to an inmate interested in Islam who was released on bail before he could return it to me. So, I’ve been relying on the Qur’an I have memorized when it comes to recitation.
Despite the fact that this is a maximum security facility and the restrictions are at times cumbersome, I really do not have much I can complain about. I have a place to sleep, three meals a day, and I can pray whenever I want in peace. I can think of millions of people around the world who cannot claim the same luxuries. On top of that, one sometimes needs a place like this to achieve clarity of mind. So, as the cliché goes, this has been a blessing in disguise in that I’ve been able to benefit from various aspects of incarceration that would ordinarily seem undesirable. I can only think of the countless imprisoned Muslims in the jails of tyrants around the globe and hope that if it is not Allah’s Decree to free them in the near future, that they taste the sweetness that Allah has placed them in prison to taste… May Allah free our sisters sooner than all…
I would like to end this letter by reminding all who read it to realize what you have been blessed with before it is taken from you: the warm hug of a loved one, the company of righteous people, the ability to see the sun and moon, a breath of fresh air, praying in a mosque, hearing the Qur’an recited, reading a good book of your choosing, taking a shower with clean water whenever you feel like, even something as simple as being able to open a door and walk out of a room! If there is one lesson that everybody can learn in here – be they Muslim or kafir – that is to take the initiative to appreciate the value of the luxuries you are blessed with before they are taken from under your nose. We hear this in every khutbah but one unfortunately cannot truly appreciate this advice until all these delights of life are out of reach, in actuality. (I highly suggest Cummings’ ‘The Enormous Room‘ in this regard, if you can find a copy, where he describes, in candid detail, life in a French prison camp stripped of all the material possessions that were once within easy grasp.) Indeed, prison only makes the Muslim stronger…

Somali fighters warn Western powers

An armed group battling Ethiopian forces in Somalia has told Al Jazeera it will take its fight beyond the country once it defeats its rivals.
“We are fighting to lift the burden of oppression and colonialism from our country … We are defending ourselves against enemies who attacked us,” Abu Mansoor, the leader of the al-Shabab’s movement, said.
“Once we are successful with that we will fight on and finish oppression elsewhere on earth,” he said.
Al-Shabab, meaning youth, split last year from the Islamic Courts Union which controlled much of Somalia, including the capital Mogadishu, until it was pushed out by government and Ethiopian troops in 2006.
It has since retaken large areas of central and southern Somalia and is putting increased pressure of the transitional government, which exercises little control from its base in the town of Baidoa.
‘Islamic rule’
In Marka, just 90km from the capital Mogadishu, Ibrahim Almaqdis, one of the fighters told Al Jazeera: “We wish to tell Bush and our opponents our real intentions.
“We will establish Islamic rule from Alaska and Chile to South Africa, Japan, Russia, the Solomon Islands and all the way to Iceland, be warned, we are coming.”
Abu Mansoor said that al-Shabab’s ranks had been bolstered by foreign fighters and urged others to join, saying that a core principle of the group was that all Muslims are citizens of Somalia.
“Many have already died fighting our cause and many others are here with us,” he said.
“We shall welcome any Muslim from any part of the world who wants to join us. We will allow him to wed our daughters and share our farms.”
The group was created in 2001 by four Somali men who had trained in Afghanistan and is listed as a “terrorist organisation” by the United States.
Relative peace
The Islamic Courts Union brought relative peace to the Horn of Africa nation during its six months in control, enforcing strict laws and renewing hopes that the Somalia would become stable enough to allow aid agencies the freedom to operate.
However, their defeat by the Ethiopian and government forces has brought renewed violence as various anti-government forces have mounted near-daily attacks.
In Marka, Al Jazeera found people welcoming al-Shabab and dressing their children like the fighters who have been the only people to bring some semblance of peace to Somalia in recent years.
More than one million people have been displaced by the fighting in Somalia, one third of the population rely on emergency food aid and the chaos has helped fuel kidnappings and piracy off the coast.

And a declaration from Allah and His Messenger to mankind on the greatest day (the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah – the 12th month of Islamic calendar) that Allah is free from (all) obligations to the Mushrikoon and so is His Messenger. So if you (Mushrikoon) repent, it is better for you, but if you turn away, then know that you cannot escape (from the Punishment of) Allah. And give tidings (O Muhammad SAW) of a painful torment to those who disbelieve.

Except those of the Mushrikoon with whom you have a treaty, and who have not subsequently failed you in aught, nor have supported anyone against you. So fulfill their treaty to them to the end of their term. Surely Allah loves Al- Mattaqun (the pious )

Then when the Sacred Months (the Ist, 7th, 11th, and 12th months of the Islamic calendar) have passed, then kill the Mushrikoon wherever you find them, and capture them and besiege them, and prepare for them each and every ambush. But if they repent and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and give Zakat, then leave their way free. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

And if anyone of the Mushrikoon (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) seeks your protection then grant him protection, so that he may hear the Word of Allah (the Qur’an), and then escort him to where he can be secure, that is because they are men who know not.

How can there be a covenant with Allah and with His Messenger for the Mushrikoon (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) except those with whom you made a covenant near Al-Masjid-al-Haram (at Makkah)? So long, as they are true to you, stand you true to them. Verily, Allah loves Al-Muttaqun (the pious).

How (can there be such a covenant with them) that when you are overpowered by them, they regard not the ties, either of kinship or of covenant with you? With (good words from) their mouths they please you, but their hearts are averse to you, and most of them are Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).

They have purchased with the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah a little gain, and they hindered men from His Way; evil indeed is that which they used to do.
.
With regard to a believer, they respect not the ties, either of kinship or of covenant! It is they who are the transgressors.
.
But if they repent, perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat, then they are your brethren in religion. (In this way) We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) in detail for a people who know.

But if they violate their oaths after their covenant, and attack your religion with disapproval and criticism then fight (you) the leaders of disbelief (chiefs of Quraish – pagans of Makkah) – for surely their oaths are nothing to them – so that they may stop (evil actions).

Will you not fight a people who have violated their oaths (pagans of Makkah) and intended to expel the Messenger, while they did attack you first? Do you fear them? Allah has more right that you should fear Him, if you are believers.

Fight against them so that Allah will punish them by your hands and disgrace them and give you victory over them and heal the breasts of a believing people,
.
And remove the anger of their (believers’) hearts. Allah accepts the repentance of whom He wills. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.”
