[Congressional Record: July 8, 1998 (Digest)] [Page D731-D732] From the Congressional Record Online via GPO Access [wais.access.gpo.gov] [DOCID:cr08jy98-1] Wednesday, July 8, 1998 Daily Digest Senate SATELLITE EXPORT CONTROLS Committee on Governmental Affairs: Subcommittee on International Security, Proliferation, and Federal Services concluded hearings to examine whether the Department of Commerce commercial satellite export control policy and process toward China is adequate to prevent technology transfers which pose a threat to United States security, after receiving testimony from John D. Holum, Acting Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs; William A. Reinsch, Under Secretary of Commerce for Export Administration; and Frank W. Miller, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense. [Note: According to Julie Sander no testimony was presented at the hearing. Chair Senator Cochran distributed charts and documents. Three of the documents (15 pp.) describe Hughes Aircraft Company's 1992-93 application for commercial satellite export license and conditions for transfer of data and technology. Copies Hughes' November 30, 1992 request (9 pp.) and a Commerce response (2 pp.) are poor but are being transcribed. See the third (4 pp.) describing concerns of the Department of Defense.
