028 is the code for ringing from the six counties (Northern Ireland). 048 is the code for ringing from the 26 counties (Southern Ireland), so the number is a valid one.

Anyone from Northern Ireland will notice that the telephone number could not be 04837507273. The code for Glenanne is 02837507xxx. Possibly just a transcription error, but it doesn't help the story's (limited) credibility.

If everyone and their brother knew he was the most prolific serial killer in Western Europe (hyperbole if I ever heard it), why, oh why, didn't the glorious republican freedom fighters simply kill him themselves? God knows they killed enough other RUC officers and soldiers, not to mention a couple of thousand innocent civilians to boot. And Glenanne is just a hop-skip-and-jump from bandit country, South Armagh's IRA heartland where the IRA and its psychopathic offshoots operate with immunity....surely a quick trip up to Glenanne from Crossmaglen would do the trick? Again, more questions than answers.

Here is a photo of a man called James Mitchell. Mitchell was a RUC Reserve Policeman based in the Markethill area of South Armagh. James Mitchell is also one of the most prolific serial killers known in Western Europe. He operated with the full knowledge of the Security Forces in Northern Ireland because he served a purpose for the Unionist-led Government -- he was killing catholics and innocent nationalist people in the Mid Ulster region -- which brought terror to the local population, earning the region the dubious nickname " The Murder Triangle".
Mitchell's phone number is 04837507273 and the full address is Lough Road, Glenanne, Armagh. His farm is reached by turning onto the Lough Road from the Mowhan Road, go about 1/2 mile up and it is on the right hand side of the hill.
Mitchell also operated with a man called Laurence McClure, who lives just a short distance from Mitchell on the Derrycaughan Road, just off the Mowhan Road in Armagh. McClure's house can be reached by turning onto the Derrycaughan Road and his house is the 3rd Bungalow down the lane. In fact his address is: New Bungalow, Derrycaughan Road.
I have done a considerable amount of research on the gang and in conjunction with all available data I have been able to reasonably accurately give a breakdown of the attacks the gang carried out and as well as a list of victims. I must add that I do believe that this list is considerably longer as there are more than likely victims killed outside their area.
Permutations of the same gang:
The starting point for the mapping exercise was Donnelly's Bar, and the comment made by the (serving) RUC Chief Superintendent that 'permutations of the same gang' also carried out the bombings in Dublin and Monaghan, and on Kay's Tavern, the murder of the two GAA supporters at Tullyvallen, the attack on the Reavey family, 'and other murders'. Through analysis of various sources I attempted to ascertain details about each of these attacks and the alleged perpetrators in order to determine links. Subsequent research and scrutiny of sources ranged from books, pamphlets, newspaper archives, discussion with families and other people knowledgeable about the attacks, Sgt John Weir's sworn affidavit, and interaction with other human rights groups. In addition there is the statement of a former member of the RUC who served in the area at the time. The results of this research so far are that I believe that the following attacks were all carried out by permutations of the same gang:
19.02.74 TRAYNOR'S BAR, AUGHENLIG
07.05.74 JAMES AND GERTRUDE DEVLIN

For anybody interested you can access the information from the following web site: www.irlgov.ie/oireachtas; search for the Barron Report and read about it in all it's gory details.
A point to note: the Security Forces in the Republic of Ireland have known about the identities of the gang members for many years and have attributed crimes of mass murder, such as the murders of the Reavey & O'Dowd families, Seamus Ludlow, John Francis Greene, and the Dublin and Monaghan Bombings to them. For various reasons such as the desire to keep British Military Intelligence happy with their supply of information of suspected IRA men, who were ironically murdered after their details were given to the gang by the RUC. These gang members committed some of the most horrific crimes of the entire troubles.
