Subject: SAC 2013, DIAC 2013

Of relevance to CAESAR: There's a convenient cluster of four conferences
in August. Two of them, Crypto 2013 and CHES 2013, will be held together
in Santa Barbara, but there are also two more that will have secret-key
cryptography as a special focus, and there are some deadlines in the
next few days.

SAC (Selected Areas in Cryptography) is a well-known twenty-year series
of cryptography conferences in Canada. The selected areas reflect
Canada's research strengths, and in particular the first two areas out
of four are always (1) "Design and analysis of symmetric key primitives
and cryptosystems, including block and stream ciphers, hash functions
and MAC algorithms" and (2) efficient implementations.

SAC 2013 (http://sac2013.irmacs.sfu.ca/) will be at Simon Fraser
University in Burnaby, the center of the Vancouver metropolitan area.
Two SAC 2013 submission deadlines are coming up now:

   * 15 May 2013 23:59 UTC: title and abstract (with draft of paper)
   * 17 May 2013 23:59 UTC: actual paper

SAC 2013 will be 14-16 August, Wednesday through Friday, right before
the combined Crypto/CHES week. Non-stop 3-hour flights from Vancouver to
Los Angeles operate at

   07:00 (Star Alliance: Air Canada, United)
   08:00 (WestJet)
   09:45 (SkyTeam and Oneworld: Delta, AA, Alaska)
   11:35 (SkyTeam and Oneworld: Delta, AA)
   12:15 (Star Alliance: Air Canada, United)
   14:42 (Star Alliance: Air Canada, United)
   14:55 (SkyTeam and Oneworld: Delta, AA, Alaska)
   15:00 (Star Alliance: Air Canada, United)
   16:15 (WestJet)
   19:50 (SkyTeam and Oneworld: Delta, AA)
   19:55 (Star Alliance: Air Canada, United)
   20:40 (SkyTeam and Oneworld: Delta, AA, Alaska)

and there's a similar story from Vancouver to San Francisco, so it's
easy to get to Santa Barbara on Saturday or Sunday.

Directions In Authenticated Ciphers 2013 (DIAC 2013), which I'm running
in Chicago, is a followup to the DIAC workshop that ECRYPT ran in
Stockholm in 2012. NIST funding means that the registration fee will be
very low, and there might even be some stipends. DIAC 2013 is meant to
cover the very latest research results, and talk submission isn't open
yet, but people already planning August travel might find some
scheduling information useful. I'm deciding now between

   * 12-13 August, Monday-Tuesday, right before SAC-Crypto-CHES---there
     are several direct flights from Chicago to Vancouver on Tuesday
     afternoon and evening and early Wednesday morning;

   * 26-27 August, Monday-Tuesday, after SAC-Crypto-CHES---so the whole
     stretch would include two weekends rather than just one.

If anyone has preferences then now is a very good time to tell me!

---Dan
