Snowden in Moscow Eyeball

Edward Snowden spoke by reportedly-secure Skype (aided by Russian authorities) to the SXSW festival in Austin, TX, on March 10, 2014. Barton Gellman, who is writing a book on Snowden, spoke at the event. Gellman is scheduled to speak by Skype to a national security journalism conference on March 21, 2014, in New York City. Glenn Greenwald is also scheduled to speak by Skype to the same gathering.

Gellman has conducted a four-hour interview of Snowden in Moscow at an unidentified hotel. For his book Gellman is likely to have had additional interviews via secure communications, perhaps including secure Skype. There is a chance an interview will be Skyped to the New York City conference which is focused on Snowden's revelations and their dramatic impact on national security journalism.

Security of Snowden remains crucial, for communications and for meetings. Two locations in Moscow likely have the highest security for housing Snowden: The Kremlin and FSB Headquarters; Snowden was allegedly photographed on a boat ride adjacent to The Kremlin, shown below. While this location may have been coincidental, it may have been a deliberate leak to indicate highest Russian security for Snowden.

A similar orchestrated leak -- again assisted and securely protected by Russian authorities -- may be in the offing by Gellman on March 21 via Skype for the most interested parties in the US. This would not be unexpected in the light of US-Russian psychological warfare over Ukraine.
