For the first time in history, cameras have been let into Government
Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in Cheltenham.
GCHQ is situated in a huge circular building known as The Doughnut, the heir
of the war-winning codebreakers. Up to 5,500 employees monitor the communications
of of national security, “economic well-being’’ and combating
serious crime.
It was originally established after World War One as the Government Code
and Cypher School (GC&CS) and was known under that name until 1946.
During the Second World War it was located at Bletchley Park. It was hear
that it gained further prominence for its role in the breaking of the German
Enigma codes.
Take a look inside the building for the very first time in the video above.
