(Supports steps taken against groups by European Union) (240) The United States designated six additional groups linked to terrorist activities whose assets will be frozen, the State Department announced December 31, saying the decision supports actions against these groups recently taken by the European Union: (begin text) U S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Office of the Spokesman December 31, 2001 Statement by Philip T. Reeker, Deputy Spokesman US DESIGNATES NEW GROUPS UNDER TERRORISM FINANCING ORDER Under the authority of Executive Order 13224, the Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, in consultation with the Secretary of the Treasury and the Attorney General, has designated six additional groups, linked to terrorist activities, whose assets will be frozen. The groups are: - Continuity Irish Republican Army (CIRA) - Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF) - Orange Volunteers (OV) - Red Hand Defenders (RHD) - Ulster Defence Association/Ulster Freedom Fighters (UDA/UFF) - First of October Antifascist Resistance Group (GRAPO) These groups were listed last week by the European Union for specific anti-terrorism measures -- an action we welcomed. We have consistently said that the fight against terrorism requires international cooperation in the fullest measure. The Secretary's decision supports the important step taken last week by our European partners. (end text) (Distributed by the Office of International Information Programs, U.S. Department of State.
