Protesters march in a street during an anti-nuclear power plant demonstration
in Tokyo, Saturday, April 16, 2011. More than 1,000 people took to the street
for the rally. After the March 11 tsunami swamped Fukushima Dai-ichi knocked
out emergency generators meant to power cooling systems. Since then, explosions,
fires and other malfunctions have compounded efforts by TEPCO to repair the
plant and stem radiation leaks. (Shuji Kajiyama)

In this Friday, April 15, 2011 photo released by Tokyo Electric Power Co.
(TEPCO), sandbags containing zeolite are thrown into the sea near Unit 3
of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in Okuma town, Fukushima
Prefecture, northeastern Japan. TEPCO began dumping sandbags filled with
zeolite, a mineral that absorbs radioactive cesium, into the sea in areas
heavily contaminated with radiation in an effort to reduce damage from the
leaks. (Tokyo Electric Power Co.) |

This April 14, 2011 image taken by T-Hawk drone aircraft and released by
Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), shows the damaged reactor building of Unit
1 at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in Okuma town, Fukushima
Prefecture, northeastern Japan. The American drone aircraft T-Hawk made by
Honeywell was used by TEPCO to inspect hard-to-access areas of the plant.
The drone can be operated from six miles (10 kilometers) away and transmit
video and still images. (Tokyo Electric Power Co.) |
