The Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP) operates two DOE Laboratories: the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania (operated by Bechtel National, Inc.), and the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady, New York (operated by the Lockheed Martin Corporation). These two laboratories are the design agencies for the NNPP. With combined staffs of over 5,600 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel, our mission is to develop the most advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology and to provide technical support for the continued safe, reliable operation of all existing naval reactors.

Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL) based in upstate New York, is a world-class research and development facility dedicated to support of the United States Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.KAPL is operated for the Department of Energy by KAPL, Inc., a Lockheed Martin Company. KAPL employees develop advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provide technical support for the safe and reliable operation of existing naval reactors and provide training to naval personnel who operate them.
KAPL employs more than 2,600 people at two major sites, in Niskayuna, NY, a suburb in New York's Capital Region and in West Milton, NY, 19 miles to the northwest. A small contingent of KAPL field personnel also support nuclear work at shipyards in Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Virginia and Washington State.
Research and Development
We design the worlds most technologically advanced nuclear reactor plants for U.S. Navy submarines. We perform fundamental research to develop better materials, chemistry control schemes and components for improved nuclear propulsion technology. KAPL scientists produced the Chart of the Nuclides, which is used worldwide by universities and nuclear laboratories.
Advanced Technology
We use theoretical knowledge, sophisticated testing and great computational power to design new reactor and propulsion systems and components that will be used on existing and future Navy surface ships and submarines. We have focus areas in direct energy conversion, electric drive propulsion and advanced composite materials.
Operations and Training
We safely operate two prototypes of submarine nuclear propulsion plants at the Kesselring site located in West Milton, New York. We support the current and future Fleet needs by training the worlds finest sailors who will operate our reactor plants at sea.
Fleet Support
We maintain, support and enhance the mission capability of LOS ANGELES Class Submarines, OHIO Class Ballistic Missile Submarines and VIRGINIA Class Submarines. [See USS Jimmy Carter.]
