GeoEye gives look at Iranian nuclear site
by Stephen Shankland
Satellite imagery company GeoEye has released a photo of what it says is
the controversial and underground Iranian uranium enrichment site that came
to light last week.
The photo, taken Saturday, shows the facility at a military site about 20
miles north-northeast of Qum and 100 miles southwest of Tehran, GeoEye said.
An analysis of the photo by IHS Jane's, a defense intelligence consulting
firm, said the facility has a primary and several auxiliary entrances,
ventilation shafts, a surface-to-air missile site, and quarry and construction
equipment.
See the shots below for a view of what the companies say are the main and
auxiliary entrances, the ventilation shafts, and an overall view.
The GeoEye-1 satellite took the photo while traveling north 423 miles above
the Earth at 4 miles per second relative to the surface of the Earth. The
satellite also supplies imagery for Google Maps and Google Earth. |
At lower left in this shot is the main entrance to the facility; near it
and to the upper right are two auxiliary access areas, according to an
interpretation of the photo by IHS Jane's. (Credit: GeoEye satellite image/IHS

26 September 2009. A2 sends a tunneling
operation (same as the first set of coordinates below):
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=34.884195,50.997909&z=16&t=h&hl=en
Buildings cover the two tunnel entrances and tunneling spill is piled nearby.
Between the two, higher up,
there appears to be remnant of a vertical shaft, often dug earlier to take
rock samples and perhaps ventilation.
The shaft may also be used for emergency evacuation.

This location of the recently disclosed second Iranian uranium enrichment
centrifuge facility being built underground
is suggested by news reports of the facility "about 20 miles north of Qom,"
"on a mountaintop" and at "a former
missile facility." Thanks to A for pointing to the area and for suggesting
alternative sites:
34°53'3.77"N,
50°59'50.96"E
34°54'20.03"N,
50°48'1.25"E
The latter coordinates are close to the site below.
