Al-Qaeda plot to bring down UK internet

David Leppard

SCOTLAND YARD has uncovered evidence that Al-Qaeda has been plotting to bring down the internet in Britain, causing chaos to business and the London Stock Exchange. In a series of raids, detectives have recovered computer files revealing that terrorist suspects had targeted a high-security internet “hub” in London. The facility, in Docklands, houses the channel through which almost every bit of information on the internet passes in or out of Britain. The suspects, who were arrested, had targeted the headquarters of Telehouse Europe, which houses Europe’s biggest “web hotel”, containing dozens of “servers” , the boxes which contain the information that makes up the web.

Telehouse to build £80m London datacentre

Martin Courtney, Computing 18 Mar 2008

Hosting provider Telehouse Europe is to build an £80m, eight-storey data centre in London Docklands, almost doubling its existing capacity. Scheduled to be complete in 2010, Telehouse South will help the company meet increased hosting demands anticipated from City-based financial institutions, online and media businesses, global enterprises and the nearby London 2012 Olympics. Telehouse Europe currently offers five data centres in London and Paris, which together with facilities run by its sister company Telehouse America and Japanese parent company KDDI, serve an estimated 700 customers worldwide.

Telehouse like other global telecommunications organizations operates in conjunction with telecomm switching hubs and carrier hotels in other countries, in particular, the United States where much of Internet traffic is directed for redistribution worldwide. The growth of lesser-known hubs, carrier hotels, data centers, server farms and downstream service providers has ballooned to serve ISPs and global operations like those of Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, IBM -- and not least governmental spies and their contractors which can easily "tap" into the switching hubs and data centers through lucrative contracts with telecomm providers. Telehouse Europe links to Equinix, among others, in the US, to serve its open and covert customers.

Equinix is the leading global provider of network-neutral data center and interconnection services, offering premium colocation, traffic exchange and outsourced IT infrastructure solutions. Global enterprises, content companies, systems integrators and network service providers look to Equinix Internet Business Exchange™ (IBX®) centers for world-class reliability and network diversity.
