Picturing America .U.S. Ambassador Karl W. Eikenberry and Mrs. Ching Eikenberry today joined a group of students from Alawdin Orphanage in visiting the Picturing America exhibition at Bagh-e-Babur. Picturing America, a touring exhibition that promotes some of America’s most significant art images to the public and students around the world, aims to strengthen the understanding of America’s history and founding principles by presenting a broad sampling of American art, including painting, sculpture, photography, and crafts. So far over 11,000 people have visited the exhibition, which was on display in Herat for three weeks before coming to Kabul. Ambassador Eikenberry took the opportunity to discuss two painting in particular: Gilbert Stuart’s famous 1796 portrait of George Washington and Norman Rockwell’s “Freedom of Speech” from his 1943 series, “Four Freedoms.” He then connected the paintings to the lives of his audience at this important moment in history.
