[Excerpt]

A MAN wanted for questioning in connection with the Omagh bombing has been stopped in South Wales. Real IRA double-agent Paddy Dixon was stopped by Customs and Excise officers in Cardiff in July. It is understood he had a large amount of cash on him and he was detained for two hours. But despite Dixon’s alleged connection to the worst terrorist atrocity in Northern Ireland, it is understood that police in the region were not alerted.

The revelation came during questions in the House of Commons yesterday, where the Government came under new pressure over the movements of Dixon who allegedly knew about the Omagh bomb plot, in which 29 people died. Dixon allegedly organised the theft of cars, which were then used to transport bombs and rockets from the Irish Republic into Northern Ireland. At the same time he was providing intelligence on nine different Real IRA operations. It is understood he is living in England under an assumed name at a location known to the Metropolitan Police.

Tewkesbury Tory MP Laurence Robertson pressed the Government over the Dixon case during Northern Ireland questions in the Commons. He said: "Can you explain why the Irish Republic refused to hand over Paddy Dixon who was wanted in connection with questioning with the Omagh bombing?
